GENERAL HOSPITAL SOMOLU CELEBRATES WORLD FOOD DAY 2024
As part of activities marking Y2024 World Food Day, the Lagos State Government has advised that the citizenry should work hand in hand with the government to ensure that there is food security in the country as well as access to nutritious food for healthy living.
The Medical Director/Chief Executive Officer of the General Hospital Somolu, Dr. Mustapha Adebola Quadri gave the advice when the catering department joined the rest of the globe to commemorate ‘The World Food Day Y2024’ with an event held within the facility, adding that access to a variety of nutritious foods is the prerequisite for a healthy living.
Head of the Catering Department, Mrs. Funmi Shola Oshinfowokan, while speaking on the importance of eating right, said the yearly World Food Day celebration helps to drum up the importance of human consumption of good food, in accordance with the precepts of the United Nations for founding The Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) in 1945.
Oshinowokan further warned that lack of access to a healthy diet is the leading cause of death in patients who have been diagnosed with diseases such as diabetes, malnutrition, cancer etc. ‘Therefore, one of the ways to fight food scarcity is for everyone to grow a certain amount of food crops in our gardens’, she said.
Also, Mrs. Latifah Olatanwa Ajibola and Mrs. Deborah Omotayo Omotayo Damisa, both from the Catering Department, advised patients and participants to eat healthily despite the diversity in culture, food preferences and cooking skills, reiterating the need to understand the cost implications of getting healthy foods in the market and their nutritive values, before making a choice.
They further noted that the yearly celebration comes up on the 16th of October and the theme for the year 2024 is: ‘Right Food For A Better Life And A Better Future’.
The high point of the celebration was the distribution of food to participants by the catering department of the hospital.
