Another international break comes and goes with Erik ten Hag still in charge at Old Trafford.

The Dutchman, 54, has overseen a fairly disastrous start to the 2024-25 campaign having won only three of his 11 competitive matches.

Manchester United have league wins over Southampton and Fulham, and sit 14th in the division with eight points from a possible 21 – four ahead of winless Ipswich Town.

Only promoted Southampton have scored fewer than United’s five league goals, while Ten Hag’s side have the seventh-highest xGC (expected goals conceded) in the Premier League.

That record will need to change when Brentford visit Old Trafford on Saturday with only Manchester City, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham having netted more than Brentford’s 13 goals this season.

On a more positive note, United actually have the eighth-highest xG (expected goals) of all 20 top-flight sides.

They have, however, underperformed that by a colossal 6.11, which is easily the highest in the league — meaning chances are being created, but they simply haven’t finish them.

But given Brentford have fifth worst defensive record this season (13 goals conceded) and are pointless in three away matches, Thomas Frank’s side may well be the perfect opponents for under-pressure Erik ten Hag.

Win and goals

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag seems to have a handy knack of clinching a win to pull himself back from the brink, and I suspect the same will happen again this weekend.

As I’ve mentioned above, Brentford do score goals but their away record is a cause for concern. The Bees are pointless from their travels this season, conceding seven during that run.

The Red Devils have also won each of their last five home league games against Brentford by an aggregate score of 13-2. Their high xG and chances created is also a positive and should see them run out winners if they’ve got their shooting boots on.

On target

Matthijs de Ligt has proven a decent bit of business for Manchester United, at least in terms of attacking threat!

The Dutchman, 25, has played 409 minutes of Premier League action since arriving and he’s managed a goal and six attempts during that time. Of those six attempts, a whopping FIVE have been on target – giving him a shot accuracy of 83.3%!

Only Wolves have conceded more shots on target than Brentford this season.
