‘Survivor 47’ episode 5 recap: Who was voted out in ‘The Scales Be Tippin’? [LIVE BLOG]
Heading into the fifth episode of “Survivor 47,” Lavo had just voted out their second consecutive person in a row. That left the red tribe now at a noticeable numbers disadvantage of four people, compared to Gata and Tuku which both still had five members apiece. So who ended up having their torch snuffed on Wednesday night?

8:00 p.m. – “Previously on ‘Survivor’!” In the fourth episode, Gata and Tuku won the combined challenge and took home chicken/egg rewards and immunity idols. Andy, Caroline and Teeny went on the journey, where Teeny agreed to lose her vote so that all three of them could earn an amulet idol. Elsewhere, Sue found her own idol and got her hands painted red in the process. At tribal council, the manipulative Kishan Patel thought he was in charge, but he had no idea that Genevieve, Rome and Sol were all working together to boot him from the game. Fourteen people remain. Who will be voted out tonight?
8:01 p.m. – “Bamboozled” and “betrayed” and “humbled” by the tribe, Teeny was now without her number one “end all, be all” ally Kishan. While she was still reeling from the blindside, Rome confronted her about “the plan” and wanted to know why she didn’t have his back like she said she would. In order to make better sense of what happened, Teeny went to Genevieve for clarity on whether she was ever an option to go home. Genevieve said no and told her that they’re in the middle while Sol and Rome are still at the bottom of their tribe. From Genevieve’s perspective, she was now in a good position because she managed damage control with Teeny and has Rome with full trust in her. Later, Rome explained to Teeny that he was hurt by Kishan breaking the trust and that’s why he was okay sending him home. Still, while accepting a hug from Teeny, Rome wanted her to feel like she’s on the bottom of the tribe and, for him, the trust is “100% broken.”
8:11 p.m. – At the site of their next challenge, the players immediately noticed only the yellow and blue colors painted on the props. The three tribes thought this signaled a swap to only two tribes, but Jeff introduced a “brand new Survivor twist” instead. For this reward challenge, the tribes were randomly drawn into two teams of seven “just for this challenge.” Jeff was clear that they would both compete and celebrate together, if they are on the winning team. The teams competing for a “Survivor Social Hour” trip to the sanctuary for a barbecue were: Anika, Sol, Rome, Gabe, Andy, Sierra and Genevieve in blue; Sue, Kyle, Teeny, Sam, Rachel, Tiyana and Caroline in yellow.
8:15 p.m. – The blue team was first to get through the first two stages of the course, but then they got stuck moving their ladder out and yellow passed them for the lead. Kyle helped yellow increase their lead in the third stage so that they could begin shooting baskets in the final stage. By the time the blue team got to the basket toss, the yellow team had successfully sunk two balls. Before yellow could get their third, blue caught up with their first two. Next, yellow scored two more balls, blue got a third, and then Sam sank the fifth and final ball for blue to win reward.
8:25 p.m. – While chowing down on hot dogs, Teeny told the story of her blindside and explained that she’s “nervous all around” on Lavo at this point. Sam was forced to defend to Sue that there’s an untrue rumor going around that he and Sierra are running things. Tiyana opened up about how aggressive Gabe has been searching for idols because she wanted everyone else to not trust him at the merge. Sue was shocked that Tiyana was so eager to throw Gabe under the bus, including talking about his use of the idol no one knew about at the first tribal. Privately, Caroline seized an opportunity to swap “good vibes” with Rachel and Teeny and told them that Sue is someone she trusts and sees as her number one.
8:30 p.m. – Back at Lavo beach, Rome expressed that it felt like a tough loss because of how hungry he is without them having use of their flint. But he wanted to use the day away from Teeny to pull Sol in closer and throw Teeny further under the bus. Rome told Sol about the amulet advantage Teeny has and then admitted that Genevieve told him she wants to work with Teeny more than Sol. Later, Rome went to Genevieve to pitch keeping Sol over Teeny, but this quick switch in attitude from Rome threw her off. When Genevieve got together with Sol, he told her what Rome said to him and so she said that differs from what Rome told her about Sol arguing for Teeny to go next. All of these conversations gave Genevieve the impression that she shouldn’t trust Rome as much as she thought.
8:38 p.m. – When Rachel and Sam returned to Gata, they told the story of the afternoon, but Sam decided to leave out that Sue named him and Sierra as the leaders. Later, Sam disclosed that information to Sierra privately. Once again this made Sierra feel as though she was stuck between two alliances and she needs to make a decision on which to move forward with.
8:40 p.m. – Teeny also decided to tweak the version she told Lavo, focusing on individuals she did or did not get to speak to. That she seemed to get such little information was a red flag to Rome. But when Rome left camp, Genevieve and Sol told Teeny everything that Rome was talking about while she was away. It helped Teeny believe that Genevieve and Sol saw how chaotic Rome can be and ignited hopes that they’d want to get rid of him before her.
8:42 p.m. – Once Tiyana stepped away from the larger Tuku tribe, Sue told Gabe everything she disclosed to the other tribes. Caroline could tell that their tribe was “falling apart” and that Gabe and Tiyana would never be capable of working together at the merge. To help bring things back together, Caroline suggested to Tiyana that she approach Gabe so that she is honest about what she said instead of letting it come up later from someone else or at the merge. Tiyana’s confession and commitment to working together at the merge didn’t seem authentic to Gabe, which was later verified as inauthentic to him by Sue.
8:51 p.m. – At the immunity challenge site, Gata arrived with their chickens in hopes of negotiating with Jeff. Sierra explained that the three eggs the chickens produced was not enough and that two of them broke. They added that because Sierra is not comfortable killing the chickens to eat them, that they’d like to give them back in a trade for two dozen eggs. Jeff thought that was too high and so they finally settled on 18 eggs instead.
8:53 p.m. – For the challenge itself, the tribes competed in another course where they had to drag a heavy net full of sandbags and coconuts in order to throw them at a puzzle wall only to have to reassemble the puzzle again. With extra players, Gata sat out Anika and Tuku sat out Sue.
8:56 p.m. – Andy took about twice as long to cut through a rope as the other two tribes and so Gata quickly fell behind while Tuku got out to a significant lead and reached the coconut throw first. Both Sol and Rome got in some great tosses at the puzzle wall and managed to get Lavo close to catching Tuku. Once Gata got to the wall, Sam and Sierra had big tosses that helped them pass Lavo and start reassembling their puzzle. By this point Tuku was in a strong lead and ended up finishing their puzzle first to earn immunity. Lavo was able to finish their puzzle literally seconds before Gata, saving themselves from returning to tribal council and sending Gata there instead.
9:08 p.m. – Gata returned from the challenge with eggs, but without their flint and no way to cook them. Andy was once again on the line because he started the challenge off failing to saw the rope with the blade and overall the consensus was that he generally made success more difficult for the tribe. Aside from Andy, the tribe aligned in their statements to get rid of Andy, but Sam trusts him more than Anika and so he wanted to get her out instead. In order to do his part to conceal the secret alliance he has with Sierra and Sam, Andy went to Rachel and Anika asking to be a part of a plan so that they’d believe he believes he’s on the outs. Rachel and Anika fell into his trap and offered a plan to him, asking that he work with them to vote Sam out.
9:13 p.m. – Sam did his best to convince Sierra that it’s the right move for them to get Anika out, stressing that Anika was playing a game by pretending to be Sierra’s best friend. Because Anika told her, Sierra knew that Anika doesn’t have a vote and Sam had an idol that is only good for this tribal. Sierra told him that Sam can’t play the idol without telling Sam because it’ll create a rift between them and so that made Sam feel like it might be in his best interest to vote Sam out.
9:19 p.m. – At tribal council, Andy expressed his positive outlook in his tribe despite the rough start he had. Part of the story of their tribe is to manage how they’re perceived by the other tribes and so they all thought that Rachel and Sam did a good job of not disclosing too much during the “Survivor Social Hour.” Later in the conversation, Rachel said she feels confident in “solidifying the alliance” that she “wants to be in come the merge,” but Jeff pointed out that there’s “not always harmony” in those outlooks. Sam and Anika both said they’re confident they’re in the majority “we” of their tribe, but Andy played his part to say he has a “shred of hope” that he’ll “turn the me into a we” tonight.
9:24 p.m. – In the voting booth, we saw Andy vote for Anika and Anika say that she would vote for Andy if she had a vote to make. Once everyone cast their vote, Sam did not stand to play his expiring idol and so Jeff read the votes: Anika, Andy, Anika, Anika. Both Rachel and Anika were completely caught off guard with Anika saying “You’re kidding me, you guys” and asking Rachel if she knew and “Who owned this?” Sam raised his hand and Andy replied that it was the three of them. In her final moments, Anika refused to say bye to anyone and left the council in tears.
