Police: Child injured
by hit-and-run cyclist
Novato police arrested a man who allegedly injured a child with his bicycle and then fled.
The incident happened at about 9:50 p.m. Friday near the corner of Grant Avenue and Second Street. Police Lt. Sophia Winter said the 8-year-old victim was taken to a hospital with minor to moderate injuries.
The next morning, investigators reviewed surveillance camera footage from a nearby business and identified the suspect, Winter said. Officers found him later near the corner of Peach and Chase streets.
Anthony Edward Mowry, 22, of Novato was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of felony hit-and-run and possessing drug paraphernalia. He was released Monday pending further review by the Marin County District Attorney’s Office.
Mowry could not be reached for comment.

Strawberry burglary
blamed on decorator
Marin County sheriff’s investigators arrested an interior designer on allegations she burglarized a client’s home in Strawberry.
The alleged crime was reported on Thursday. The loss included $80,000 worth of jewelry and gift cards, sheriff’s Sgt. Adam Schermerhorn said.
When the client confronted the suspect, she admitted to spending about $5,000 on a gift card, but she denied stealing jewelry, Schermerhorn said. He said investigators executed a search warrant at the suspect’s vehicle and home in Novato and found the homeowner’s jewelry and gift cards.
Cesalee Venetta Venema, 43, was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of burglary, embezzlement, possessing stolen property and grand theft. Her bail was set at $50,000.
Venema was released pending further review by the district attorney’s office. She could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Police book suspect
after downtown fire
Novato police arrested a man who allegedly started a debris fire near the downtown bus hub.
Around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday, patrol officers saw the suspect ignite sticks and leaves by the corner of Redwood Boulevard and De Long Avenue, police Lt. Sophia Winter said. They detained him and extinguished the fire, Winter said.
Brandon Scott Southwick, 36, of Novato was arrested on suspicion of arson and giving false information to an officer. He was booked into the Marin County Jail, where his bail amount was set at $25,000.

Fingerprint leads
to burglary arrest
Marin County sheriff’s detectives have arrested a Brisbane resident they connected to a Novato auto burglary.
The crime occurred on July 24, when someone stole more than $1,200 worth of tools from a vehicle, said sheriff’s Sgt. Adam Schermerhorn. He said investigators found a fingerprint on the vehicle’s door handle and identified the suspect through the California Department of Justice fingerprint system.
Schermerhorn said the suspect was on parole. Detectives arrested him Tuesday after an interview.
Johnny Manual Trujillo, 33, was booked into the Marin County Jail on suspicion of burglary and violating his parole conditions. His bail amount was set at $50,000.
The Marin County District Attorney’s Office filed a felony burglary charge against Trujillo on Wednesday.
