Women's Health Wednesday: Breast Prosthesis
ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) - Women who have undergone surgery for breast cancer will often need to address some cosmetic challenges in the aftermath. It may seem daunting but there are experts who can help.
In this week's Women's Health Wednesday, Jackie Keto, the owner of Her UnderThings on Western Avenue, talks about the unique options they offer for women in Upstate New York.
The journey for this local business owner is a personal one. She opened the shop in memory of her sister who suddenly passed away in March of 2014. Now she's using her services to help women regain their confidence.
Keto says they're seeing more young women who have gone through mastectomy's and they're looking for options in their bra selection.
Beyond bras, they offer prostheses including both off-the-shelf options that fit most women and custom options which include a 3D scan of the remaining breast tissue or chest wall that will create a perfect fit. Keto says her shop is the only one in Upstate New York that offers the 3D scan in store.
Breast prosthetics are the best non-surgical breast reconstruction option available, according to American Breast Care.
These types of services can be covered through insurance and do require a prescription from a doctor but it doesn't need to be an oncologist.
