China and Pakistan call for inclusive and moderate Govt in Afghanistan
The leaders of Pakistan and China, in a joint statement, urged the Taliban government in Afghanistan to adopt a “moderate” policy and form an inclusive government.
On Tuesday, Pakistan’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a joint statement from Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Chinese Premier Li Qiang.
The Chinese Premier traveled to Islamabad for four days to attend the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit.
The prime ministers of Pakistan and China also emphasized the need for effective and measurable action against terrorism in Afghanistan. The two leaders stressed the importance of preventing Afghanistan’s soil from being used against neighboring countries.
Pakistan has accused the Taliban of supporting opposition groups, including the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Pakistani officials claim that the TTP has been using Afghan territory to launch attacks inside Pakistan. At the same time, the Taliban deny this allegation and claim that they will not allow anyone to use Afghanistan’s soil against neighbouring countries.
Sharif and Li emphasized the need to strengthen counterterrorism cooperation at both bilateral and multilateral levels and called on the Taliban government to take concrete and verifiable actions to eliminate terrorist groups active in Afghanistan.
The prime ministers also stressed the importance of enhancing communication and coordination regarding the situation in Afghanistan and called for “coordinated efforts by the international community to encourage the Taliban to establish an inclusive political framework and implement moderate policies.”
Both countries agreed to play a constructive role in supporting and integrating Afghanistan’s sustainable development into the international community.
During his visit to Islamabad, the Chinese Premier referred to Pakistan as China’s “iron friend” and signed multiple memorandums of understanding in transit, trade, and security.
This joint stance reflects the growing concerns of Pakistan and China regarding the security challenges posed by terrorism in Afghanistan, particularly the cross-border activities of militant groups. Both nations seek stability in the region while pushing for Afghanistan’s responsible participation in global efforts for peace and development.
