Boots, Tesco and Cineworld stores closing by the end of this month

From Tesco to Boots and even Cineworld, Britain’s best-loved brands keep closing stores.

Last year it was the turn of Next, Wilko, Iceland and M&S to roll out mass closures, shutting more than 400 branches between them.

Now Boots, Cineworld and Tesco are on the chopping block, although the scale of closures vary.

More than 54,600 jobs were lost in nearly 5,000 retail store closures in the first eight months of this year, according the Centre for Retail Research.

Tesco

The supermarket giant is something of an outlier here given it’s one store closure is actually downsize.

It will just put the High Wycombe superstore, in Buckinghamshire, out of service between October and next autumn.

When it reopens, it will have ‘a refreshed look and feel’, not least because it will only occupy the ground floor after Tesco renegotiated its lease with the council.

Until then, Tesco will run a temporary Express store in the town centre.

Cineworld

Cineworld has had a rocky few years, with bankruptcy, a takeover by lenders, and a relocation to the Cayman Islands.

Despite slashing its £4billion debts, the cinema chain is still cutting down on costs in an attempt to save the business.

Part of that involves closing the following Cineworld cinemas:

• Glasgow Parkhead
• Bedford
• Hickley
• Loughborough
• Yate
• Swindon

A spokesperson said: ‘We are implementing a restructuring plan that will provide our company with a strong platform to return our business to profitability, attract further investment from the Group, and ensure a sustainable long-term future for Cineworld in the UK.’

Boots

The high street pharmacist, famous for aisle upon aisle of beauty products, has already closed 290 stores so far this year.

A further 10 will be shuttered by the end of October when their leases expire, bringing Boots’ branch total down to 1,900, from 2,200 in January.

It’s part of a plan to save up to £618million by closing as many as 650 outlets, which the company announced last year after a rough time for sales.

Boots’ owner Walgreens Boots Alliance, said: ‘Evolving the store estate in this way allows Boots to concentrate its team members where they are needed and focus investment more acutely in individual stores with the ambition of consistently delivering an excellent and reliable service in a fresh and up to date environment.’

The last 10 stores to close have not yet been confirmed.
