Today, 8th October, marks World Circular Textiles Day, and to mark the occasion, we’re teaming up with the Department of the Environment, Climate and Communications to shine a light on the ways we can embrace circular fashion.
Ready to be truly on trend this autumn? Here are some of our top tips on embracing circular fashion.
Buy Less
Be mindful of your fashion consumption and commit to reflecting on what you really need. Log off the online retailers and skip the shopping trip at the weekend. Not only will this approach allow you to reduce your own carbon footprint, but it’s kinder on your wallet too.
Re-wear
Did you know that wearing the clothes you already own for an extra nine months can reduce their carbon footprint by 25%? Just because you’re buying less clothes doesn’t mean you have to be stuck in a fashion rut. Dive deep into your wardrobe and dig out those jeans that never get a look in, or that dress you’ve been waiting to wear. Trust us, once you stop buying new, you’ll be much more inclined to shop your own collection.

Being more mindful about your fashion consumption doesn’t mean that you can’t continue to serve looks on the daily. To keep that wardrobe fresh, organise a clothes swap with your mates, share the love and breathe new life into your mates’ items. There are also heaps of clothes swaps events taking place in Ireland. There’s simply no denying the negative environmental impact of overconsumption. Textiles have the fourth highest impact on climate change, after food, housing and transport. Over 100 billion new items of clothes are made every year and less than 1% of material used to produce clothing is recycled into new clothing.
When we’re bombarded with online ads for fast fashion and high street stores punctuate our daily commute, it can feel like overconsumption of clothes is unavoidable.
