Fabrizio Romano: Why Man Utd coaching staff have been blown away by 28y/o, especially after what he did v Villa
Manchester United coaching staff are very happy with Andre Onana’s development following an impressive start to his second season at the club, according to Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano.
The 28-year-old struggled in his first season with the Red Devils upon joining from Inter Milan last summer, but he has been brilliant this term.
The Man United star kept his fourth clean sheet of the new Premier League campaign against Villa on Sunday -the most by any goalkeeper this term – leaving the coaching team impressed.
Man United have generally struggled this season, recording just three victories in 11 games across all competitions.
However, Onana has been one of their best players, producing outstanding performances against Fulham, Southampton, Crystal Palace and Villa in the league.
The Red Devils have drawn their opening two games of the Europa League campaign, shipping four goals across both matches, but things could have been worse if not for the former Ajax star’s brilliance.
They lost 3-0 to Tottenham Hotspur last weekend and 3-0 to Liverpool in September, but they could have conceded more goals in both games had Onana not made some outstanding saves.
Man United manager Erik ten Hag has largely been criticised for signing some of his former Ajax players, but the recruitment of the Cameroonian is starting to prove smart.
His debut campaign after replacing David de Gea did not go as planned, and some schoolboy mistakes proved costly.
However, Onana is starting to show why he was signed, and he could keep the most clean sheets in the Premier League this season despite the woeful performances of the outfield players.
