Sports briefs: Former Marin Catholic standout Petras has career day in defeat
Former Marin Catholic standout Spencer Petras threw for a career-high 372 yards is a losing effort as Utah State fell to Boise State, 62-30 on Saturday night.
Petras completed 27 of 41 passes and threw three touchdowns but the Aggies got buried in the second quarter when the Broncos scored 35 points.
Petras threw a 59-yard touchdown to Jalen Royals to pull Utah State within 14-10 early in the second quarter. Boise State running back Ashton Jeanty responded with a 75-yard touchdown run and the rout was on.
Petras threw a 75-yard touchdown pass to Royals later in the quarter but the Aggies went into the locker room trailing 49-17 at the half. Petras’ third touchdown was a six-yarder to Otto Tia late in the third quarter.
For the season, Petras is completing 63% of his passes for 810 yards with six touchdowns against three interceptions.
- Former San Marin High standout Dominic Ingrassia threw the first touchdown of his college career as the College of San Mateo held on for a 14-7 win against Fresno on Saturday. Ingrassia made his second start of the season, completing 12 of 19 passes for 123 yards. Ingrassia threw a 38-yard touchdown pass to Nico Caruso to tie the game at 7-7 in the second quarter. Ingrassia also ran nine times for 26 yards as the Bulldogs (4-1) won their second consecutive game.
College volleyball
Former Tam High standout Wesley Slavin recorded her 1,000th career assist for Ithaca College on Saturday. Slavin, a sophomore from Mill Valley, had 29 assists in a three-set win over Smith College then had 22 more in a four-set loss to New York University.
The 1,000-assist milestone was just one part of a big week for Slavin, who had a career-high 58 assists in a four-set win for the Bombers (11-3) against Trinity University of Texas on Friday.
Girls volleyball
Sylvia Tuerke and Brianna Nottingham had 29 kills apiece as San Marin win 3-2 with tournament wins against Novato, Oakland Tech, and Capuchino. The Mustangs lost to Ukiah then ended with a loss to Santa Cruz in the silver bracket semifinals to place sixth overall.
Gabi Ginocchio had 41 assists, five aces for three kills for the Mustangs (22-10). Sawyer Zappelli had 13 kills, eight aces, and six blocks.
- Marin Catholic reeled off three consecutive tournament wins before falling to Archbishop Mitty in three sets on Saturday. The Wildcats (20-5) picked up wins over Pleasant Grove, Folsom, and Rocklin.
