Queen’s Park 1 Hamilton Academical 0

Queen’s Park picked up their first win at Hampden this season with a goal from Jack Turner enough to see off Hamilton Academical 1-0.

Callum Davidson was able to field the same starting XI for the first time this season with the only change in the home squad being on the bench where Magnus Mackenzie replaced Timam Scott.

The visitors included former Spiders Lee Kilday, Euan Henderson, Connor Smith and Steven Bradley in their ranks with the Lanarkshire men kicking the game off.

The visitors had a first minute chance as Scott Martin pounced on a loose ball and darted deep into the home box only for Dane Murray to squeeze the striker out at the expense of a corner.

With five minutes played Queen’s striker Zak Rudden fell to the ground as he chased a long forward pass from Turner with Sean McGinty in close attendance however referee Dan McFarlane was not interested.

As the hosts looked to put pressure on the Hamilton goal Ryan Duncan and Dom Thomas sent over inviting crosses however there were no takers.

Calum Ferrie was perfectly placed on nine minutes to deal with a low Smith shot after Kevin O’Hara had flicked forward an inviting pass.

QP’s Player of the Month for September Cammy Kerr broke forward three minutes later and exchanged passes with Thomas before seeing his goal-bound 14-yard shot deflected wide for a corner.

On 14 minutes it was Hamilton’s chance to go close as Jamie Barjonas was picked out 25 yards from the hosts’ goal and the midfielder advanced to the edge of the area before sending a drive just off target.

The action was back at the other end shortly afterwards as Duncan and Rudden combined to find Thomas 20 yards out and the home skipper twisted and turned his way into space before firing just wide.

Midway through the opening half Queen’s almost grabbed a goal out of nothing as Roddy MacGregor got on the ball 35 yards out with Dean Lyness forced into a diving save after the midfielder let fly with a well struck first time shot.

Thomas fired just wide again on 29 minutes after a clever headed pass from Will Tizzard found Turner who played the ball to his skipper.

On 32 minutes Queen’s created the best opening so far when Henry Fieldson careered down the left wing and cut his way towards goal after leaving two defenders trailing, before rolling a pass to Duncan who swept over.

Kilday had an overhead kick following a knockdown from a corner clutched by Ferrie before the defender conceded a foul near his own box that MacGregor whipped in without a Black and White shirted player getting on the end of it.

Queen’s had one last surge forward in a bid to get a goal before the break as Turner and Duncan combined in injury time down the right however despite sending two crosses over the visiting defence held firm.

Half time – Queen’s Park 0 Hamilton Academical 0

Ferrie and Tizzard remained calm in the opening exchanges as Hamiton looked to pressure them into mistakes just a few yards from goal however the duo passed the ball out of defence well.

Four minutes into the restart Duncan had the ball picked off his toes as he looked to shoot with Turner taking possession and firing in a drive that Lyness watch clear his goal.

On 51 minutes Fieldson showed his worth in his own box as he slid in to block a shot from O’Hara that looked all set to trouble Ferrie.

Two minutes later Kerr took his side forward with clever control on his chest and then a 20-yard run with the promising move breaking down when a pass to Thomas was intercepted.

Just before the hour mark Thomas tried his luck from 18 yards out again with Lyness delighted to see this effort whizz past a post.

A goal finally arrived on 62 minutes, and it was for Queen’s Park as Fieldson fizzed over a cross from the left that was perfect for TURNER to control at the back post and then slam into the net.

Turner had another shooting opportunity six minutes later after Duncan, Rudden and Thomas combined although this time he was off target.
Another opening came with 19 minutes left when Duncan got the better of Jackson Longridge and sent over a cross that was met by MacGregor with Lyness getting down low to save.

Hamilton gave Queen’s a scare with quarter of an hour to go when O’Hara was found in space on the right-hand side of the box however the striker sliced wide.

On 77 minutes Kerr intercepted a visiting clearance and fed Turner who slipped a pass to Duncan and his drive looked to be heading in the right direction until a deflection took it wide.

Louis Longridge came on for Duncan shortly afterwards to set up a Longridge versus Longridge contest on the right for the remainder of the game.

Queen’s Longridge curled over a delightful cross with six minutes left that was met by MacGregor with his header clutched by Lyness.

Hamilton substitute Daire O’Connor came close to a leveller three minutes from time when the ball dropped to him eight yards out with his shot missing the far post.
