Pakistan deploys military to maintain security during SCO Summit
Pakistani media have reported that the government has assigned the responsibility of securing the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit to the military under Article 245 of the Constitution.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior announced on Friday, October 4th, that Article 245, which allows the government to call in military forces to assist civilian administration in maintaining peace, decided to deploy the army to maintain law and order during the SCO summit.
Islamabad will host the SCO summit for the first time on October 15th and 16th.
Pakistan’s Ministry of Interior statement emphasized that the army will oversee the security of key government buildings and the Red Zone in Islamabad.
Mohsin Naqvi, Pakistan’s Interior Minister, said in a meeting held on Friday that additional military personnel, rangers, Frontier Corps (FC), and Punjab police will be deployed to ensure security during the SCO summit.
Pakistani media also reported that the federal government has completed its preparations for the event, which will be attended by leaders and delegations from the eight member countries of the SCO.
Pakistan is gearing up to host the SCO summit at a time when its security concerns have reached critical levels.
