Sports briefs: Tien advances to Tiburon Challenger semifinals
Learner Tien is the lone seed left standing as the Tiburon Challenger field was whittled from eight down to four on Friday night.
Tien, the No. 2 seed, defeated No. 8 seed Denis Kudla 7-6 (5), 6-3 in the late match to secure his spot in the semifinals. Tien is set to face Eliot Spizzirri on Saturday after Spizzirri eliminated No. 3 seed J.J. Wolf 6-3, 1-6, 7-5 in the most competitive match of the day.
Saturday’s other semifinal will be a clash between unseeded players after Nishesh Basavareddy defeated Karue Sell 7-5, 6-0, and Jack Pinnington Jones ousted Colton Smith, 7-6 (5), 6-4. Play is set to begin at 11 a.m. at the Tiburon Peninsula Club. The men’s singles final will be held on Sunday.
The men’s doubles final is all set after the second-seeded team of Thomas Schoolkate and Luke Saville defeated Theodore Dean and Carl Emil Overbeck, 6-3, 6-4. Schoolkate and Saville will face Spizzirri and Patrick Kypson, who were 6-1, 6-4 winners against Goncalo Oliveira and Kelsey Stevenson.
College football
Former San Marin High standout Dominic Ingrassia made his season debut at quarterback for the College of San Mateo, helping the Bulldogs to a 17-14 win against American River last Saturday.
Ingrassia completed six of 13 passes for 94 yards and was intercepted twice. Ingrassia’s biggest play of the game was a 35-yard pass to Jack Elgaan that helped set up the winning field goal early in the fourth quarter.
The Bulldogs (3-1) are set to host Fresno at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
College softball
Tam junior Ava Lee announced via social media on Friday that she has made a verbal commitment to play for Georgetown University. Lee was named an all-MCAL first team player as a sophomore last season after being a second-team selection as a freshman in 2023.
Lee, a pitcher and outfielder for the Red-tailed Hawks, led the team in batting average (.473), runs (11), doubles (eight), and home runs (one). Lee had a 3.70 earned-run average with 78 strikeouts against 31 walks inside the circle.
Girls tennis
Redwood’s Leila Fraschetti outlasted Terra Linda’s Jamie Schmidt in a battle at No. 2 singles to help the Giants snag a 6-1 victory on Friday. Fraschetti won the match, 7-6 (4), 7-5. Julia Laury and Adrienne De Mos won for Redwood at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectively. TL freshman Mimi Kemp won the most competitive match of the day, outlasting Espy Cubillos, 7-6, (7), 7-6 (7).
- Maya Riisgaard and Siena Moglen won matches without dropping a game at the top of the singles ladder to propel Tam to a 7-0 victory against Novato on Friday. Asha Sanda and Maisy Wyss also won singles matched for the Red-tailed Hawks.
Men’s soccer
Dominican University scored three times in the final 30 minutes to rally for a 3-2 road victory against Hawaii Pacific on Thursday.
Armando Jimenez got the Penguins on the board in the 61st minute to cut the deficit to 2-1. Lex Bernier tied the game in the 67th minute then Diego Grande provided the winner for the Penguins (4-4-1, 1-2-0 PacWest) in the 76th minute.
Former San Rafael High standout Norman Tellez made his ninth start of the season for the Penguins.
Women’s soccer
Carmi Dotario scored the only goal of the game, lifting Dominican to a 1-0 road win against Hawaii Pacific on Thursday. Dotario scored an unassisted goal in the 74th minute for the Penguins (4-4-1, 1-2-0).
Former San Rafael High standout Jackie Lancaster made her first start of the season for Dominican. Lancaster has one assist in five appearances for the Penguins this season.
