Suspect waving rifle, knife shot and killed by police
PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) -- A man was shot and killed by a police officer early Friday morning after authorities said they were seen waving a rifle and knife in the air.
According to Portland police, just after 12:30 a.m. officers responded to an apartment in the Brentwood-Darlington neighborhood where a caller had reported a neighbor was waving around a rifle and making threats.
Upon arriving at the scene, officers said they saw the man with the rifle and set up a perimeter, alerting area residents to stay inside for safety using the PublicAlerts system.
An officer from the Enhanced Crisis Intervention Team attempted to speak with the man, authorities said, but just after 1:20 a.m., an officer fired a shot, hitting the man.
Authorities said that officers moved in to provide aid, but the man was already dead.
The man was found to be carrying a .22 caliber pellet air rifle as well as the knife, officials said.
“This has been an extraordinarily challenging and tragic night for our community,” said Chief Bob Day. “I want to recognize that any loss of life has ripple effects throughout our city. I’m grateful to all of the members assigned to patrol who answered these calls for service, and the numerous PPB members and partners who responded to investigate these complex incidents.”
The incident is still under investigation and the involved officer has been put on leave, following bureau protocol.
Anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact Portland police.
