Get dressed for Red Bull Rampage: Win an ABUS HiDrop helmet
As the dig teams start to built lines in the Utah desert, we’ve got a Rampage-ready helmet to give away. The ABUS HiDrop helmet will be worn by Tom Isted and Georgia Astle, who are both competing at Red Bull Rampage for the first time this year. Tom wore the ABUS HiDrop during his world record jump, a 120-foot (36.6-meter) backflip, at Darkfest in South Africa and says, “The helmet definitely gave me the confidence to ride the biggest jumps in the world. I was particularly impressed by the remarkably wide field of view that the helmet offers.”
It’s not just for plummeting down cliffs though, and has been used by riders at the EWS, Crankworx World Tour and in the DH World Cup, so has both impact resistance and pedal-comfort in mind. The ABS outer shell makes the helmet impact-resistant, should your ride go wrong. The EPS and EPP core provide shock absorption, while vents keep you cool and are angled to direct air into the padding, even on slow climbs. Mesh on the rear vents and chin bar keeps the bugs out, while the adjustable padding gives a comfortable and snug fit.
The ventilation and perfect fit features are of great importance to enduro racer Christian Textor from the YT-Mob team: “I was involved in the development of the HiDrop and have been using the helmet for a while now. We have optimised the padding and airflow, especially regarding enduro races, to ensure good ventilation during uphill sections and at low speeds. We have also improved the padding in the neck area to provide a better fit around the head. For me, it is crucial, especially in enduro racing where we ride at high speeds in intense terrain without knowing everything 100%, that the helmet tightly fits the head, that I have good airflow and that I can breathe well. The ABUS HiDrop offers all of this in a very pleasant way. It provides an optimal view and goggles from different manufacturers fit well. It doesn’t make any noise, creak, or whistle, and it really provides a lot of calmness, allowing me to fully concentrate on the race without distractions. Lastly, the helmet looks really cool and has its own design language, which is very well executed.”
The break-away visor detaches from the helmet to protect the neck, but unlike many helmets it does so without breaking the attachment points or visor.
For those who wear specs, it’s designed to accommodate glasses – a nice feature for those who can’t get on with goggles. Of course, you could pair it with goggles too – a pair of ABUS Buteos perhaps?
The weight of the ABUS HiDrop is 1050g for size M, and is available in four sizes (S, M, L, XL) and four colours (shiny white, shiny black, midnight blue, moss green). A practical bag is also included in the package.
As you’d expect for a helmet designed with events like Red Bull Rampage in mind, the HiDrop complies with all the toughest safety standards: EN1078, ASTM F1952, ASTM F2032, CPSC, AS/NZ.
Georgia Astle joins the first ever women’s Red Bull Rampage line up having already experienced the Virgin, Utah landscape as part of the Red Bull Formation women’s freeride progression camps. With experience there as both a digger and rider, she should be well prepared for the logistical challenges the terrain and climate present. Her background in downhill and enduro racing gives her plenty of raw mountain experience, and she’s been working on her jumps and tricks on more sculpted features at events like Proving Grounds. With such a broad base of experience, she’ll surely be looking to put in an impressive top to bottom display of her skills.
Tom Isted has a world of unknowns ahead of him – more used to Woody’s Bike Park in Cornwall, he’s never been to the Utah desert before so has no first-hand idea of what he’ll be facing. With his slopestyle background, he’ll be working hard to get a line built that allows him to pull the kinds of tricks we’ve seen him throw down at the likes of Crankworx and Darkfest. Though, with all the added exposure of the Virgin mountains, he’ll perhaps scale things back a little in search of a clean run. Dig team member and good friend Conor MacFarlane has previously competed at Red Bull Rampage, so hopefully he’ll be able to bring the experience needed on the dig days.
