Who is Dante Cassanova? Spurs youngster travels with squad for Europa League tie
As Spurs fly out to Hungary to prepare for their upcoming Europa League tie with Ferencvaros, young Dante Cassanova has been spotted among the squad. So, here’s all you need to know about his Tottenham career so far, and whether he will get a chance to play.
What kind of player is Dante Cassanova?
Dante Cassanova is a versatile defender who plays primarily as a centre-half, but who can also fill in at right-back or even push into a defensive midfield role.
He’s fairly small and lightweight, but is able to use his agility and athleticism to outrun and outmanoeuvre his opponents when he’s driving forward or covering space in defensive areas.
Cassanova is a comfortable and composed ball-playing defender, but he’s more the kind of player who will start an attacking move rather than be there to provide any kind of goal contribution.
Spurs career to date
While he’s yet to make his senior debut for Spurs in a competitive game, Dante Cassanova has represented the club regularly at all youth levels.
He has come through the club’s academy, making 32 appearances for the Under-18s, and now has 33 appearances for the Under-21s to date (Transfermarkt).
Cassanova was a key figure in the Premier League 2 victory for the Spurs development squad last season, and has been captaining the team this term.
Will Ange Postecoglou use Dante Cassanova?
Cassanova was added to Tottenham’s Europa League B-list recently, and can be named in the squad for matchdays in the competition. With Ange Postecoglou looking to rest key players, there’s every chance younger players like Cassanova will get a chance.
The Europa League draw has given Spurs some relatively comfortable fixtures, Ferencvaros being one of them. While no game is easy in this competition, Tottenham would be expected to win even with some first-team regulars missing, so Postecoglou could give Cassanova some minutes from the bench on Thursday.
We would be very surprised to see Cassanova start the game, but with Destiny Udogie potentially injured and Djed Spence not included in the Europa League squad, it’s not beyond the realms of possibility.
