Speculation continues over Israel’s possible response to Iran’s Missile attacks
Israel has stated that it will not leave Iran’s missile attacks unanswered, leading to widespread speculation about how Tel Aviv will respond to Tehran. However, Iran asserts that Israel does not dare to target its nuclear facilities in any potential retaliation.
Several Iranian officials, including Ghalibaf, the head of the Islamic Council, and security officials immediately issued warlike rhetoric after the missile attacks on Israel. They warned that if Israel acts against Iran, it will be destroyed.
These aggressive remarks by Iranian security officials, which some have called irresponsible, seem to be aimed at rallying public sentiment within Iran and are widely propagated by state media.
In contrast, the cautious and responsible stance of senior Iranian officials, including President Masoud Pezeshkian and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, suggests that Iran does not seek to escalate the war in the Middle East despite the aggressive rhetoric from its defense and security leaders. Nevertheless, speculation about Israel’s potential response has not subsided.
Reuters, citing analysts after the Iranian missile strikes on Israel, reported that Israel’s response this time might be harsher, with the possibility of targeting Iran’s nuclear or oil facilities.
In response to the speculation that Israel might target Iran’s nuclear facilities, Iran’s Foreign Minister told Qatar’s Al Arabi TV, “I doubt Israel would dare to target Iran’s nuclear facilities.”
Meanwhile, other experts expect that the United States will continue to work behind the scenes to restrain Israel’s reaction.
When asked if he would support a military response from Israel to Iran’s attacks, U.S. President Joe Biden replied, “The answer is no.” After an emergency G7 meeting, he further stated that Israel’s response to Iran’s attacks should be “proportionate.”
President Biden’s seemingly conflicting responses on supporting Israel’s military retaliation have led to various speculations, but the position of the U.S. State Department is relatively clear.
Matthew Miller, a spokesperson for the U.S. State Department, said during a press conference, “It is clear that what Iran has done is an unprecedented escalation. Israel has the right to respond. We are consulting on the nature of that response.”
The situation between Israel and Iran has escalated following missile attacks, with both sides exchanging threats and rhetoric. While Israel contemplates its response, Iran dismisses the possibility of a direct attack on its nuclear facilities. The U.S. remains a key player, urging restraint while acknowledging Israel’s right to defend itself. The region remains tense, with global powers closely monitoring the unfolding situation.
