Sports briefs: Terra Linda outlasts Archie Williams in five-setter
Josie Campo posted a double-double as the Terra Linda High girls volleyball team rallied twice for a 18-25, 25-16, 17-25, 25-17, 15-6 victory against Archie Williams on Thursday night.
Campo had a team-high 19 kills and 17 digs to pace the Trojans (16-6, 2-2 MCAL), who jumped into fifth place above the Peregrine Falcons (2-14, 2-2) due to the head-to-head tiebreaker. The playoff fields for most MCAL sports were expanded back to six teams this season from four, making this a crucial game for both teams.
Eloise Atkins chipped in with 10 kills, five digs, and three blocks for TL. Leah Mathewson had 21 assists, four kills, and one block.
Girls tennis
Alessia Balliet and Jennie Liu were victorious in the top two singles matches, respectively, as Redwood swept past San Rafael 7-0 on Thursday. Caroline Semon and Espy Cubillos also had singles victories for the Giants.
Girls water polo
Gabby Reichley scored four times and Kelly Kurtzig added three more as Marin Academy took down Marin Catholic 10-4 on Thursday. Cece Dickenson also scored for MA (6-3, 3-0 MCAL), which took control of the game with four goals in the third period to go ahead 9-3.
Boys water polo
Matthieu Giaque had a game-high five goals as Marin Academy defeated Marin Catholic on Thursday. Noah Hirson scored twice for MA, which scored four times in the fourth quarter after the game was tied 5-5 through three periods.
Hall of Fame
San Rafael High School, the SRHS Alumni Association and WeAreSR! parent organization will welcome three new Hall of Honor inductees on Monday. The ceremony will be held at 6 p.m. in the Hayes Theater on campus.
Gregory Szot was a member of the SRHS athletic boosters from 2011-16, during which time he helped raise funds, worked to renovate the snack shacks, established a fundraiser bocce tournament, initiated booster funding of concussion testing for student-athletes, helped establish funding for a full-time athletic trainer, and more.
Sean Castle, a music teacher and mentor from 2001-21, is being honored posthumously. Former SRHS principal Nando Llacuna is also being honored.
Tennis
The annual Tiburon Challenger returns to the Tiburon Peninsula Club on Sunday, Sept. 30 for a week of elite exciting tennis featuring some elite players. The tournament, which in recent years has included 2023 and 2024 US Open semifinalists Alex Michelson and Ben Shelton, and Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury, the US Open doubles champions from 2021-23.
