Hassan Nasrallah assassinated? Israel bombs Hezbollah’s HQ in Beirut, Lebanon
The Israeli army has reported an airstrike on Hezbollah’s main headquarters in Beirut.
Israeli media have claimed that the target of this attack was Hassan Nasrallah, the leader of Hezbollah’s militia. It is said that the main Hezbollah command center was located beneath residential buildings.
Al-Manar TV, which is close to Hezbollah, reported successive airstrikes, and eyewitnesses described several explosions in Beirut followed by thick clouds of smoke.
In a statement on its Telegram page, the Israeli army wrote: “Hezbollah’s command center was deliberately built under residential buildings to use the people of Lebanon as human shields.”
Hezbollah sources told Reuters, AFP, and local media in Lebanon and Iran that Hassan Nasrallah is “alive and well” following the attacks in the southern suburb of Beirut.
According to the initial assessment by Lebanon’s Ministry of Health, at least two people were killed, and 76 others were injured in the attack.
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati, who is currently in New York for the UN General Assembly, said: “This attack shows that Israel does not value efforts to achieve a ceasefire.”
He instructed Lebanese authorities to “mobilize all relevant units.”
Tensions have risen in the Middle East since 7 October last year, with over 41,000 people, including women and children, killed in Gaza, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.
This incident highlights the ongoing tensions between Israel and Hezbollah, with both sides continuing to escalate the conflict. The use of civilian areas for military purposes by Hezbollah and the subsequent Israeli response demonstrates the complexities of warfare in densely populated regions, risking further civilian casualties.
Efforts for peace seem distant as both parties remain entrenched in their positions. The international community may need to intervene more effectively to prevent the situation from spiraling into a wider regional conflict.
