The most expensive home for sale in every state

A sprawling beachside residence in Florida is the most expensive property for sale in the US.
  • Business Insider searched Zillow listings to find the most expensive home in each US state.
  • From beachside abodes to French chateau-inspired manors, each home offers some unique amenities.
  • Florida has the most expensive home for sale in the US, followed by California and New York.

The US housing market is gradually tilting more toward buyers.

According to Realtor.com, about 19.3% of homes listed for sale saw a price cut in August, easing some pressure off buyers plagued by high mortgage rates. The Fed cut rates last week and is expected to lower them further in the coming months, which should eventually push down mortgage rates and increase homebuyers' purchasing power.

Luxury real estate, however, is a different ball game.

Despite a global dip in transactions, the high-end real-estate markets in Manhattan, Los Angeles, and especially Palm Beach continue to be robust, according to a September Knight Frank report analyzing sales of $10-million-and-up homes.

Perhaps unsurprising, then, that New York is home to the third-most expensive home on this list: an eight-bedroom duplex penthouse in Central Park Tower.

Casa Encantada, an 8.4-acre deco-style mansion in LA's Bel Air neighborhood, is the second-priciest property.

Taking the top spot for the most expensive home, though, is a 1989-built sprawling beachside residence in Florida.

To compile this list, Business Insider scoured Zillow listings. The properties below were the most expensive in their states as of September 20, 2024. When listing photos were unavailable, photos of a nearby city or landmark were used.

Here's a look at the priciest homes for sale in each state.

The centerpiece of Hobble Creek Ranch is a majestic-looking, 17,493-square-foot mansion with seven bedrooms and 10 bathrooms.

Beyond its manicured lawn lies 3,387 sprawling acres of ranchland, which herds of wild deer and elk call home.

The main house is flanked by a two-bedroom guest house, an indoor tennis court, and a pool house. Summit Sotheby's International Realty agent Kerry Oman told BI it's a "recreation paradise."

VERMONT: 1044 Grosse Point Road in Ferrisburgh
The lakeside property comes with a private golf course that has 33 different holes.

Listing price: $22.9 million

This 10,000-square-foot, 11-bedroom mansion in the quiet town of Ferrisburgh sits on an ecologically protected section of Lake Champlain within a 300-acre estate.

Besides the main house, which has views of the Adirondack Mountains and a private golf course with 33 holes, there are five other residential buildings, a farmhouse, two barns, and three piers that jut out into the lake.

Element real-estate agent Jessica Bridge told BI the estate is a "haven for wildlife" and has only been owned by four families since it was built in 1906, making it "a rare legacy opportunity."

VIRGINIA: 7979 E Boulevard Drive in Alexandria
The mansion sits on the largest private land parcel of the Mount Vernon estate, once owned by George Washington.

Listing price: $60 million

Perched at the end of a stone-lined driveway lies an ivory-white, eight-bedroom, 15-bathroom mansion on 16.5 acres of land that was once part of former president George Washington's Mount Vernon estate.

It features a game room, a movie theater, a spa, a three-bedroom guest house, and a private dock on the Potomac River.

WASHINGTON: Homes in San Juan Island and Hunts Point
A $58 million home tied for the most expensive listing in Washington is located in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, a three-hour ferry ride from Seattle.

Listing price: $58 million

Tied for the most expensive property in Washington are two ultra-lavish mansions listed by Compass.

Both listings do not disclose their exact addresses.

One is Halftide Farms, an estate located in the quaint seaside town of Friday Harbor on San Juan Island, and the other is a property in Hunts Point, a secluded town on a peninsula by Lake Washington.

Situated on 90 acres of beachfront land, the Friday Harbor property includes five individual residences with a total of 11 bedrooms and 13 full bathrooms. Standout features include tennis and pickleball courts, multiple pools, and a cabana.

Meanwhile, the Hunts Point property comes with its own mansion — a 10-bedroom, five-bathroom sandstone residence with access to 327 feet of private beach. The property sits on over four acres of land and features a cabana, a guest cottage, and private tennis courts.

The real-estate agent representing the sellers of both properties declined to comment on the listings.

WEST VIRGINIA: 555 Eisenhower Ridge in White Sulphur Springs
The house is part of the Greenbrier estate, surrounded by the West Virginia mountains.

Listing price: $9.1 million

Situated on the 10,000-acre Greenbrier Sporting Club estate, which director of sales Hayes Beard describes as "America's playground since 1778," this private property offers eight bedrooms — one of which features a slide for kids — and 11 bathrooms over three levels.

Built in 2021, the 10,341-square-foot home also includes a bowling alley, a fitness center, and an infinity pool that overlooks tree-covered mountains and manicured golf courses.

WISCONSIN: N2301 Knollwood Drive in Lake Geneva
The Wisconsin house has views of Geneva Lake.

Listing price: $8.9 million

This five-bedroom, five-bathroom New England-style house originally built in 2003 offers 140-degree views of Geneva Lake.

The property comes with a heated porch, a chef's kitchen, and a private pier. It's "relaxed, casual, and gracious, and perfectly reflects the lake life," said Compass real-estate agent Janis Hartley.

WYOMING: 596 Wood River Road in Meeteetse
Antlers Ranch has been in the same family since 1895.

Listing price: $85 million

This ranch in the tiny town of Meeteetse, Wyoming, fits its nickname: "Little Yellowstone."

According to its listing with real-estate brokerage Live Water Properties, the land has been kept and managed by the same family since 1895. The family has created a haven for wildlife like moose, antelope, and elk on the 16,500 acres of green pastures, burbling rivers, grassy plains, and rolling hills.

Dotted across the land are several residences, including two ranch houses, a bunkhouse, and a duplex.
