James Maddison is over the moon for ‘unselfish’ Spurs star who ‘works so hard for the team’
James Maddison has become the latest Tottenham player to shower praise on Brennan Johnson, admitting that he is delighted to see the winger score in back-to-back matches.
Brennan Johnson is hitting some form at Spurs
From the way Johnson took his goal against Brentford, one would not have guessed that this was a player who was struggling for confidence.
The 23-year-old received the ball on the right, cut past the defender and produced an arrowed finish into the bottom corner from a tight angle.
The goal was the Tottenham star’s second in two games after he scored the match-winner in the Carabao Cup clash against Coventry City in mid-week.
The two strikes could not have come at a better time for Johnson, who had come under heavy criticism online for his performances and Ange Postecoglou could not have asked for a better response from the attacker.
James Maddison is Johnson’s biggest supporter
Maddison egged the crowd on to cheer loudly after Johnson’s goal and the attacking midfielder has now explained why he did that.
When asked about the former Forest star’s striker, the 27-year-old told The Athletic: “He works so hard for the team and made so many runs in behind to stretch Brentford.
“How many times did he come short and Pedro (Porro) clipped a ball for him to chase? It creates more space in the middle for me and Dejan (Kulusevski). Unselfish stuff like that people don’t always see.
“So when he does score, and they can shout his name, I was just getting them going. That will mean a lot to him and his family here. That is back-to-back goals. He is a great kid and I love him so I was just trying to give him confidence.”
Spurs Web Opinion
One can tell from the reaction of the Spurs players and Postecoglou over the past few days just how popular a figure Johnson is in the dressing room. The players clearly appreciate the selfless work that the winger does for the side.
