Project Zero: Lidl Cyprus and AKTI join forces for cleaner coasts
Showing it is dedication to environmental awareness and action, Lidl Cyprus joined forces with AKTI Project and Research Centre for a clean-up campaign in Limassol. On Saturday, September 7, #teamLidl members and volunteers removed a total of 170kg of waste from the Karnagio beach area, specifically 110kg of mixed waste and 60kg of PMD. The cleanup of the area resulted in enhancing the protection and conservation of the local ecosystem.
Corporate commitments and actions
Project Zero, reflects to the unwavering commitment of Lidl Cyprus to implement viable practices and cultivate environmental awareness in society. Incorporated in the REset Plastic Cleanup Collective initiative of the Schwarz Group, to which the company belongs, it contributes to the worldwide effort to reduce plastic. At the same time, it is part of the Lidl Cyprus’ new sustainability initiative Lidl YOU – Empowered by #teamlidl, designed specifically to inspire and raise awareness among its employees on sustainability issues.
Joint effort for good
Important voices, such as those of Limassol Mayor Yiannis Armeftis and Lidl Cyprus General Director Vasilis Lagoyiannis, expressed their gratitude and support to all the volunteers to underline the value of this initiative. President of AKTI Dr Xenia Loizidou highlighted the importance of continuously supporting and maintaining these efforts for the good of the planet and the next generations.

Inspiration and action for young and old
The purpose of Lidl Cyprus’ cooperation with AKTI and the creation of Project Zero is, since 2021,is to fight against plastic pollution in coastal and marine ecosystems, through the study and detection of microplastics along the coasts. The main aim is to inform, raise awareness and mobilise citizens, young and old, towards preserving natural resources, reducing the reckless use of plastic, producing goods through the circular economy and consistent recycling. In the framework of this cooperation, until August 2024 specialised training was provided to over 33,000 children in 211 schools across Cyprus, while from cleanups of the seabed and coast, with the help of volunteers and schools, a total of 12.7 tonnes of waste has been collected.
