Postecoglou issues blunt response to whether Spurs need to be more defensive
Ange Postecoglou gives a clear answer when asked about the need to be pragmatic, explaining why he will never consider doing that at Tottenham.
Postecoglou was brought in with a clear remit
Postecoglou was very much brought to Tottenham with a remit of producing possession-based, attacking football.
There was a recognition from the club that they had moved away from their ethos by appointing counter-attacking managers, with the hierarchy vocal about wanting to get back Spurs’ DNA.
The Australian has certainly done just that, getting the Lilywhites to play a really watchable brand of football, but there have been some questions raised recently about whether his side are too open defensively to succeed at Premier League level.
Postecoglou’s blunt response
At the fan forum at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday, a Spurs fan quizzed the 59-year-old about whether his side needed to be more pragmatic.
According to Paul Hitsheet, the supporter pointed out that teams who win silverware tend to have solid defences along with a threatening attack.
Postecoglou’s response was blunt, with the Spurs boss remarking: “You’re spot on mate but it won’t be us. As much as we want success there is a Spurs way and I won’t deviate from that.”
Ange will always stay true to his principles
With Ange, the style of football always came pre-advertised, with the Australian never deviating from his preferred approach in any of the jobs he has had.
Tottenham knew that when they appointed him, and he is delivering what he promised.
Apart from the fact that this style stays true to the club’s ethos, it is clear that Postecoglou believes that this approach, when perfected, gives his side the best chance of being successful.
