Beauty expert shares popular oil to avoid if you’re experiencing hair loss – it’ll make your tresses fall out more
A BEAUTY expert revealed the popular oil to avoid if you’re locks are thinning out.
The professional explained that a common skincare item may be escalating your hair loss.
In her viral video, TikTok user Kirti Tewani (@kirtitewani) warned her followers not to use the product if they are losing hair.
According to the expert, castor oil will not help your hair grow, and may even have the opposite effect.
She explained that a key ingredient makes it ideal for your complexion but not your locks.
“It’s rich in ritalinic acid, which is a fatty acid, and it helps with nourishment and it’s great for hydration but this will not grow your hair,” Kirti said.
She cautioned anyone with “weaker follicles” to stay away from the oil.
“It’s so rich and thick that it’s going to stick to your follicles and, when you shampoo, you are going to lose a lot of hair,” the expert said.
She explained that castor oil can be good in small quantities and when mixed with other oils, for nourishment.
The product is often marketed as helping with hair growth but there is no scientific evidence to back this up.
Kirti joked that if this was the case her face should look like a “hairy bush by now.”
She added that while castor oil has “tonnes of benefits,” hair growth is not one of them.
Instead, she recommended looking for a hair growth oil that contains rosemary, peppermint, or amla.
Amla is an Indian gooseberry plant which is rich in antioxidants.

The hair expert confirmed that these ingredients are “all proven by modern science [to help with] hair growth.”
She also advised her audience struggling with hair loss to massage their scalps, describing the technique as “one of the most important things when it comes to hair growth.”
The 4 stages of the hair growth cycle
Hair experts at Philip Kingsley shared the four stages of the hair growtn cycle are: Anagen, Catagen, Telogen and Exogen
Anagen Phase: Also known as the ‘Growth Phase’ or ‘Active Phase’, is when the cells in the root of your hair are most rapidly dividing so more new hair is formed.
During the Anagen Phase, hair grows around half an inch a month [about six inches a year], and faster in the summer than in winter.
This phase of the hair growth cycle lasts an average of three to five years.
Catagen Phase: Following the Anagen Phase, your hair cycle enters a short transitional phase known as the Catagen Phase, which signals the end of active hair growth and cuts individual hairs off from the blood supply and from the cells that produce new hair.
Approximately three percent of all hairs are in this stage at any time and it lasts for around 10 days.
Telogen Phase: The third stage of your natural hair growth cycle is the Telogen Phase, a resting period when strands remain in their follicles but are not actively growing.
An estimate of 10-15 percent of your hairs are in the Telogen Phase at any given moment.
The Telogen Phase lasts around three months or 100 days.
Exogen Phase: The final stage of the Hair Growth Cycle, when individual hair strands are released from their follicles and fall out.
Now the whole process begins again.
