Morning Briefing: Mets, Braves Set Rotation Plans Heading Into Big Series
Good morning, Mets fans!
The Mets and Braves have revealed their probable starters for this week’s huge three-game series in Atlanta which begins tomorrow evening. Luis Severino (11-6, 3.79 ERA) will take the hill for the Mets in the series opener, followed by David Peterson (9-3, 3.08 ERA) on Wednesday, and Sean Manaea (12-5, 3.29 ERA) in the series finale. Meanwhile, the Braves will counter with rookie Spencer Schwellenbach (7-7, 3.61 ERA) in the opener, followed by Cy Young favorite Chris Sale (18-3, 2.38 ERA) on Wednesday, and Max Fried (10-10, 3.42 ERA) on Thursday. First pitch for all three games is scheduled for 7:20 p.m.
Wild Card Update
The Braves got homers from Ozzie Albies and Gio Urshela before Jorge Soler drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single in the seventh inning. Raisel Iglesias recorded a six-out save as Atlanta held off the Marlins, 5-4. The Mets head to Truist Park with a two-game lead over the Braves for the final NL Wild Card spot. If the Mets win two of the three games in Atlanta, they will clinch a postseason berth.
The Diamondbacks jumped out to an 8-0 lead in Milwaukee, but the Brewers chipped away before scoring four times in the bottom of the eighth inning to erase the deficit and hand Arizona a sickening 10-9 defeat. Since the Mets hold the tiebreaker over Arizona, they now hold the second NL Wild Card spot.
The Padres scored three times in the eighth inning to finish off a three-game sweep of the White Sox with a 4-2 victory. The Mets trail San Diego for the top NL Wild Card spot. Meanwhile, the White Sox tied the 1962 Mets by losing their 120th game of the season.
