Exclusive: Spurs legend Gary Mabbutt predicts how many goals Solanke will score this season
The Spurs Web caught up with Tottenham legend Gary Mabbutt at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after the Brentford game, and he told us how many goals he expects Dominic Solanke to score for the club this season.
Dominic Solanke can deliver strong goal tally for Spurs
Tottenham finally replaced Harry Kane in the summer, making the bold decision to spend £65m on Dominic Solanke and bringing the forward in to lead Ange Postecoglou‘s attack.
After a disappointing debut where Solanke failed to score and picked up an injury, Spurs fans have been made to wait to see their new man in action again.
The marksman played in the North London derby last weekend and in the Carabao Cup against Coventry City, but he got off the mark for Spurs this weekend in the 3-1 win over Brentford.
It was a simple goal for Solanke, but now that he’s got his first goal for the club, there is hope many more will follow.
Speaking to The Spurs Web (with Spursified) after the game, Tottenham legend Gary Mabbutt discussed Solanke’s talents, and made a prediction as to what the season holds for the 27-year-old.
He said: “I like him. I saw a lot of him last year at Bournemouth and I like his style of play I think if we get the balls into, he will thrive on that. He was strong today, held the ball up well, he’ll lay things off, and he’s got a decent touch.
“I think you’ll get goals from him. I’m expecting at least 15, maybe 20 goals from him this season.”
Spurs needed to wake up against Brentford
Going on to discuss the victory over Brentford and the manner in which Spurs fought from a goal down to claim the win, Mabbutt praised the Tottenham press.
“I think it woke us up straight away, and I think it set [Brentford] back a bit because they suddenly sort of tried to keep the ball at the back and they were giving it away. We exploited them.”
Is Solanke a one-season wonder?
Solanke’s impressive return of 19 goals for Bournemouth last season will be difficult to replicate regardless of what team he is in. But, with the chances Spurs create, you’d have to imagine he will have a good shot at bagging at least 15 goals.
He’s proven himself to be highly prolific at Championship level before, but he will now be desperate to prove that last season’s Premier League tally was not a flash in the pan and that he can now press on and be a consistent top performer in this division.
