Alasdair Gold blown away by Spurs starlet’s performance on loan against PL side
Alasdair Gold admits that he was blown away by the performance that Jamie Donley delivered for Leyton Orient against Brentford, suggesting that Tottenham could have used the attacking midfielder’s creativity.
Jamie Donley is out on loan with Leyton Orient
Donley was arguably the best player in Tottenham Under-21s set-up last season, with the attacking midfielder spearheading the side’s march to the Premier League 2 title.
The 19-year-old is considered to be one of the most talented young players at Spurs at the minute and is widely viewed at Hotspur Way as a future Tottenham first-team prospect.
Ange Postecoglou evidently rates that teenager highly, with the youngster being named on the bench on a number of occasions last season and even making four senior appearances as a substitute (Transfermarkt).
Donley joined Orient on a season-long loan deal in the summer and he has featured heavily for the League One side at the start of the season, having clocked up five appearances so far.
The on-loan Tottenham man featured at the Gtech Community Stadium for the O’s in their Carabao Cup clash against Brentford last week, with the Bees emerging 3-1 winners.
Alasdair Gold is a huge fan of Jamie Donley
Gold was left mightily impressed with how Donley did against Thomas Frank’s men, opining that the teenager would have come in handy for Ange Postecoglou.
The journalist said on his YouTube channel: “I was watching Jamie Donley playing for Orient against Brentford the night before. So much of the stuff he was doing, now in hindsight, I was like ughhh, he’s gonna be at Orient and playing but my goodness.
“He was playing so many fast progressive passes, creative balls between the lines, setting people away. And you just kind of thought, had he started in that lineup I think Spurs have less problems, and I know that’s pitting a lot on what is he, 19 years old.
“But I actually think he was that good against Premier League opposition in Brentford, he would have made a huge difference. But, it’s better what he’s doing, I think the loan move.”
Leyton Orient loan will only improve Donley’s development
It would have been extremely short-sighted for Tottenham to have hung on to Donley as he would not have got more than a handful of chances.
Playing regular first-team football in the EFL will be hugely beneficial for the 19-year-old’s development.
