Newcastle looking to beat Tottenham to signing England international
Football Insider reveal that Newcastle United are ready to make advances towards Lille midfielder Angel Gomes, who is thought to be on Tottenham’s radar.
Angel Gomes is catching the eye at Lille
Gomes, who has been making waves in French football over the last couple of years, is now into the final year of his deal and there has thus been plenty of speculation linking him with a return to England.
Tottenham are thought to be one of the clubs ready to offer the midfielder a route back to the Premier League, with GiveMeSport revealing last week that the Lilywhites and Liverpool have shown the most concrete interest in the player.
However, the Lilywhites and the Reds are not the only clubs interested in the Three Lions midfielder.
Newcastle ready to step up chase
Football Insider say that the Magpies have become the latest club to enter the race for Gomes as Eddie Howe is keen on bolstering his midfield.
The report describes Newcastle’s interest in the former Man Utd man as ‘concrete’, adding that they are keen to take the 24-year-old to St James’ Park.
The publication adds that the England international is open to returning to the Premier League in 2025, with several clubs expected to compete for his signature.
Spurs Web Opinion
One would expect Tottenham to be one of the clubs at the front of the queue to land Gomes as the Lille star would be a perfect fit for Ange Postecoglou’s system and for the project underway at N17.
The only worry with Gomes is – does he have the physicality to succeed in the Premier League? The lone pivot role in Spurs’ system asks a lot from a player and even the likes of Bissouma and Bentancur struggle at times.
