NYPD releases bodycam footage of Brooklyn subway shooting
NEW YORK (PIX11) -- The NYPD released body camera footage showing the events leading up to a police-involved shooting at a Brooklyn subway station that injured a suspect, two bystanders and a police officer.
The video was posted to the NYPD's YouTube page on Friday. Warning: Some viewers may find parts of the video disturbing.
The bodycam footage aligns with the NYPD's prior narrative of Sunday's events. Derell Mickles, 37, can be seen jumping the turnstile at the Sutter Avenue subway station. Officers follow Mickles and escort him out of the station, the video shows.
Mickles returns to the subway station and dodges the subway fare a second time, walking through a metal gate at the station. Police then follow Mickles for the second time.
Mickles is holding a knife in several portions of the video. At one point, he says, "You're going to make me kill you if you don't leave me the [expletive] alone."
Officers tell Mickles to drop the knife, to which he responds, "I am dropping nothing; shoot me," the video shows.
During the standoff, a northbound train pulls into the subway station. Officers repeatedly tell Mickles to drop the knife, the video shows. Mickles then gets onto the train, screaming for officers not to touch him.
The officers continue to tell Mickles to drop the knife. As he walks toward the officers with the knife in his hand, the cops deploy their Tasers, which are not effective, the video shows.
Mickles then gets off the train and runs with his blade. He stops farther down the subway platform, and officers again tell Mickles to drop his knife before discharging their weapons, the video shows.
At the end of the video, NYPD Assistant Commissioner of the Public Information Division Carlos Nieves says the NYPD and other agencies will continue investigating and conducting further interviews in the coming weeks and months.
