Postecoglou confirms Spurs did look at signing England international this summer
Ange Postecoglou admits that Tottenham did consider a move for Ivan Toney in the summer but revealed that Dominic Solanke was always his number-one target.
Spurs spent a lot of money on Dominic Solanke
Tottenham spent a club-record £65m to bring Solanke to the N17 in the summer and even though the 26-year-old was coming off a terrific season for Bournemouth, some eyebrows were raised at the transfer fee.
In fact, several pundits suggested that Spurs had made a mistake by going for the former Cherries star rather than Toney, claiming that the latter would have offered more to the Lilywhites (talkSPORT).
In the end, Toney seemingly had no takers for the fee that Brentford wanted, with the centre-forward making a surprise switch to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ahli.
Postecoglou says Spurs looked at Ivan Toney
Postecolgou has now confessed that the former Brentford man was on Tottenham’s wishlist for the summer but he made it clear that Solanke was his preferred option right from the start of the window.
When asked if Spurs considered a move for Toney, the Tottenham head coach told Football.London: “We looked at him but the reality was that Dom is the one that I wanted.
“It took the whole summer to get him in but he was the one that fitted the profile that we wanted.”
Spurs Web Opinion
No matter how much Postecoglou makes it clear that he wanted all the players we signed, some fans will continue to blame Levy and the club for the signings.
You cannot on one breath demand that the club back the manager and then criticise the club when you do not agree with the manager’s signings.
