Postecoglou explains why he is ‘really excited’ about Tottenham’s future
Ange Postecoglou says he is trying to build a team at Tottenham that can challenge for top honours consistently, remarking that he is excited to see this young squad grow together.
Spurs have invested time and money into youth
It is fair to say that Tottenham’s transfer strategy of buying up-and-coming youngsters over established stars does not sit well with some fans, with many seeing it as a lack of ambition.
However, it is clear that the strategy has Postecoglou’s backing, with the Australian preferring to work with young players and being adept at moulding some talents into the specific needs of his system.
Postecoglou confessed that his successor might be the one who enjoys the benefit of his work in developing the current younger crop at Spurs but insisted that it is something he has always taken pride in.
When asked about balancing the club’s ambitions of winning trophies with developing the youngsters, the Spurs boss told Football.London: “It has to happen in conjunction. What I’m trying to do, which is what I’ve done wherever I’ve been irrespective of my tenure, is build teams that are going to be challenging over the course of time.
“All teams that do that seem to grow together, so you need that element of youth for it to come to fruition as you go along. It has to be a combination of both. When do you hit the sweet spot when you have enough experience in the building?
“That’s hopefully when it all goes together, and when the experienced players come to the end of a cycle, you’ve got the rest coming through. I’ve always done it and it’s a balancing act.
“I’m really excited about the young players we’ve brought in and the ones who are coming in, and look, another manager might be the beneficiary of them, I don’t know.
“But in the course of time they’re going to be really good footballers and make an impact. They’ll only develop if they play, so we’ve got to give them the opportunity to play.”
Can Spurs win trophies with youngsters?
Former Liverpool defender Alan Hansen once famously said ‘you can’t win anything with kids’ but Postecoglou is not a believer in that, expressing his desire to disprove that claim.
When asked about Hansen’s quote, the Spurs boss said: “Until you do. It’s always great to break stereotypes. You definitely need the experience. Having winners in the group helps that process because when a young guy comes in, if he’s got somebody there who’s already won things, he kind of learns the behaviours so you do need both.
“But I’ve always liked the fearlessness and naivety of young players. They haven’t felt the pain of losing something. I like the fact that they’re a little bit fearless.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Postecoglou’s system relies on having players abandon their fears and some of their conservative instincts.
That is why the Aussie coach loves working with young players, who are more likely to be brave and express themselves on the pitch as they have not experienced the downsides of doing so.
