A STAY-AT-HOME mum has come under fire after confessing she finds it ”unattractive” when a man can’t financially support his wife and family.
The unnamed woman took to the popular parenting forum Mumsnet to explain why she felt ”sorry” for a local mum who had to work – whilst she was at home.
The mother, whose kid goes to school, said that she’s been a stay-at-home mum since her maternity leave ended and has no plans to return back to being employed.
The family is thought to live a rather comfortable life, as her hubby runs a business and ”earns enough” to support them all.
In the post, the woman claimed she’d be able to look after everyone if something unfortunate was to take place.
”I have things in place which mean I would be financially secure if he was to leave me or pass away and for later in life.”
However, just down the street, the situation is totally different for another family, the woman went on.
”There’s a couple who live down my street and she has to work full time and I feel sorry for her leaving so early every morning and coming home way after her children have finished school.”
She wrote: ”I totally agree with women working if they want or need to but I can’t help but feel sorry for them.
”I’m not sure how well this post will go down but AIBU [Am I Being Unreasonable] to find it unattractive if a man can’t financially support his wife and family?
”I mean to the point where the wife doesn’t have to work if she doesn’t want to.”
Unfortunately for the stay-at-home mum, many Mumsnet users hit back, explaining that this wasn’t the reality for many cash-strapped households who are struggling to make ends meet.
One said: ”The unfortunate economic reality is that most couples can’t afford to live on one income.
”If you’re looking for a partner and you exclude everyone who isn’t a high enough earner to let you not work, you may well never find someone. ”
Another wondered if she’d still stay with her hubby if he was to go bankrupt.
”So if his business went down the tubes you’d leave him?”
What is a trad wife?
A trad wife (short for traditional wife) is a woman who chooses to take on an ultra traditional role in marriage, meaning she makes dinner and looks pretty whilst her husband goes to work.
The trend takes inspiration from the idea of a 1950s housewife.
Many ‘trad wives’ choose to dress in the style of clothing popular in this period (think floral dresses and frumpy cardigans).
Additionally, the values considered important to trad wives are similar to strict Christian values.
Trad wives believed they were not forced into this way of life, and that it was their purpose to be homemakers.
The trend, which has garnered attention on social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram, glamorises a time gone by with little acknowledgement of the economic challenges facing families and mothers today.
”The 1950s are calling you back!” a third chimed in.
”As a woman I like working and earning my own money, I have no desire for a man to provide for me and I certainly don’t want to be a SAHM [Stay-at-home-mum],” a fellow Mumsnet reader added.
But not everyone was as harsh, as another woman said she’d ”love” to swap roles and be in her position.
”I would love your life. For most families there’s no choice and I was a single mum from when they went to school so have always worked full time.
”I have been and still am absolutely knackered.”
