Nimmo’s Stellar Night Aids Mets’ Playoff Push
The New York Mets continue to score runs at will following Thursday’s 10-6 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, during which four different players contributed via the long ball. They have now recorded ten or more runs in three consecutive games for the first time in franchise history.
Brandon Nimmo has struggled since the All-Star break, but the 31-year-old continued to grind out at-bats and provide an offensive spark against the Phillies, hinting at a potential break-out heading into the final nine games of the season. He finished with a 2-for-5 stat line that included a go-ahead two-run home run in the third inning and an RBI double in the fourth. He now has three home runs in his last seven contests to go along with nine runs batted in while riding a six-game hit streak.
“You empty the tank every single day, and whatever you got the next day, you empty that tank,” Nimmo said. “At this time of the year, with the veteran guys we have, and young guys, that good mixture, you’re going to see guys lay it all out on the field. How can you not in that atmosphere? At this time of year, this is what you play for.”
Much like his teammates, no matter his level of play, Nimmo has consistently been level-headed through his slump and continues to step up as a leader. Since Francisco Lindor’s injury, it has been guys like Pete Alonso and Nimmo that have kept spirits high. It has almost acted as a rallying cry over the course of the past week, with longer tenured Mets players speaking to the media every day during the team’s playoff push while picking each other up on the field.
