Postecoglou claims Spurs were not ‘flat’ against Coventry, takes positives from the win
Ange Postecoglou insists that Coventry City presented a very difficult challenge for his side and praised the character that his players showed to seal a comeback.
Spurs pulled off the great escape
Heading into the final few minutes of the clash at the Coventry Building Society Arena, it seemed like things were spiralling towards a disaster for Tottenham.
The Lilywhites looked on the verge of being knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the first time of asking, just as they did last season, which would have severely dented their chances of ending the season with a trophy.
However, thankfully for Postecoglou, the away side managed to turn things around in dramatic fashion late on, with strikes from Djed Spence and Brennan Johson turning the game on its head and sending the Lilywhites to the next round.
The Spurs head coach would have certainly breathed a major sigh of relief at the result and he praised his side for relentlessly flooding forward and not giving up until the end.
Postecoglou says Spurs were not flat
When asked if he is pleased with the character shown or disappointed with the overall performance, Postecoglou told Football.London: “Yeah, I don’t know, flat performance is a bit harsh. I thought it was a typical cup game. I thought Coventry were really good.
“They put some real energy into the game, and we couldn’t really get a grip on it. So we had to hang in there. We had to work really, really hard just to stay in the game and obviously going a goal behind makes it even more challenging.
“But like you said at the end there we showed some real spirit and character, which is probably what’s been missing in the first four games.
“We’ve had the performance, but we haven’t had that relentlessness to get a result. You sense that in the last 10 minutes, we got real belief out of that, and hopefully that’s a good sign moving forward.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Given the results leading up to this game, it would have been easy for the players to hide and feel sorry for themselves after going 1-0 down to Coventry, but the way they fought back and kept going until the end was a great sign and will hopefully help the side’s confidence.
