Jamie Redknapp on what he noticed about Ange Postecoglou after Coventry City win
Jamie Redknapp says that Ange Postecoglou almost looked embarrassed at the full-time whistle on Wednesday, insisting that the Tottenham boss knew his side got away with a poor performance.
Spurs almost tasted cup defeat against Coventry
After back-to-back defeats in the Premier League against Newcastle United and Arsenal, Spurs fans would have wanted to see their side flex their muscles against Coventry and deliver a statement performance.
However, what they got was a spiritless display, which almost ended in Carabao Cup humiliation.
Heading into the final few minutes of the game, Spurs looked to be on their way out of the competition, but thankfully, late goals from Djed Spence and Brennan Johnson helped the away side grab victory from the jaws of defeat and seal progression to the next round.
Postecoglou was embarrassed, says Redknapp
Redknapp gave a scathing appraisal of Tottenham’s performance, remarking that Postecoglou himself would not be able to believe that his side had won the game.
The pundit told Sky Sports (18/09/24 as relayed by The Daily Mail) about Tottenham’s performance: “They were so poor, going nowhere fast until the goals. Up until then, you look at what Mark Robins did [scoring for Man United], we might look back at this goal as something similar and that’s kept them in it.
“There was almost a look of embarrassment from Ange at full-time. They will be mightily relieved. They will be sat in the dressing room thinking ‘How on earth have we got away with that?’ Coventry were the better side and he will be so relieved. They’ve got to make sure it is a turning point for them.”
Spurs Web Opinion
Tottenham’s performance on Wednesday is a matter of concern and left a lot to be desired. However, it is a bit unfair to criticise Ange when his side are playing well without getting results while also criticising him when his side gets a win without being at their best.
These sorts of cup ties against Championship sides are never easy as they always give their all considering this is essentially their cup final.
