No property tax increase in Cohoes tentative 2025 budget
COHOES, N.Y. (NEWS10)-- Cohoes is not proposing a property tax increase in its tentative budget for the fifth consecutive year. The tentative budget of $28.4 million only proposes a 20-cent per 100-gallon increase for the city's sewer fund.
According to city officials, the city's fund balance grew by $500,000 in 2024, exceeding $6.5 million. The Board of Managers will review the budget on Friday, Sept. 20, and Monday, Sept. 30, before presenting it to the community for feedback at the Common Council's workshop on Tuesday, Oct. 8.
Officials said the sewer fund increase accommodates the city's Long-Term Control Plan's expenses. Additionally, officials mentioned that a significant portion of the budget is represented by public safety spending.
Mayor Bill Keeler said that in addition to cutting spending each year, the city has successfully secured state and federal funding. "This has allowed us to pave a record number of streets, continue our restoration efforts of our historic city-owned buildings, and move forward with our futuristic floating solar project – the latter of which tees up huge budgetary savings for 2026 and decades beyond," Keeler said.
