Senior Spurs player blames club after defeat to Arsenal
Tottenham Hotspur suffered a disappointing North London derby defeat at home to Arsenal yesterday and it appears that the frustration was not only felt among the fanbase.
Cristian Romero has let his frustration get the better of him
Ange Postecoglou’s side enjoyed the better of the opening proceedings at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium with chances falling to Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski.
In typical fashion, Tottenham were once again unable to defend from set pieces, something which haunted them last season.
An Arsenal corner kick on 64 minutes saw Saka’s delivery flighted into the six-yard box and Gabriel easily fended off Cristian Romero to head in beyond Guglielmo Vicario, with the Italian goalkeeper having been too occupied in pushing an opponent player out of his path just seconds before.
Following the 1-0 defeat which has left Tottenham with just four points from their opening four fixtures, Cristian Romero took to social media platform X to retweet a post from respected Argentine journalist Gaston Edul.
The post from Edul suggested that Romero was tired during the match as a result of Tottenham not laying on a private jet for him to return from international duty.
Romero featured for Argentina in their 2-1 defeat to Colombia, which was played five days before the North London derby.
National federations hold the responsibility of arranging flights for their players to and from the countries where they are playing domestically, however, some clubs do organise private travel at their own cost to bring their players back quicker.
Tottenham did not charter private travel for their vice-captain since Thursday was a scheduled day off for Ange Postecoglou’s first-team squad and as a general rule of thumb, do not tend to do this.
Edul wrote on X, which Romero retweeted, a post in Spanish that translated to: “Tottenham lost to Arsenal again.
“They weren’t able to fight until the end because they weren’t across the details.
“It was the only Premier League club that made their international players return, on their own and without proper logistics, on the decision of the club’s leadership.
“They gave away the advantage because their players arrived with less rest than the others: Cuti Romero played with tiredness.”
Romero needs to look closer at himself rather than blame others
The defender is typically flawless in his displays for Argentina but already this season has been guilty for goals against Leicester City and Arsenal.
As a senior figure within Ange Postecoglou’s side, letting his frustrations spill out by sharing a negative post on social media will certainly not go down well internally.
Tottenham are in a tough spot at the moment with just four points to their name and have not shown any marked improvement on their frailties from set-pieces where they continue to leak goals.
Romero could find himself rested for Wednesday evening’s Carabao Cup third round tie at Coventry City, where he will certainly have no complaints about feeling fresh for the visit of Brentford on Saturday.
