Former coach says one Spurs player reminds him of Zinedine Zidane
The coaches who have worked with Archie Gray over the years are raving about the young Tottenham midfielder, with one of his former Leeds youth coaches even likening the 18-year-old to Zinedine Zidane.
Archie Gray is impressing at Tottenham
Gray has had a decent start to his Spurs career, with the 18-year-old impressing in pre-season and showing glimpses of promise in the two substitute appearances he has had so far in the Premier League.
The teenager will be hoping to become a regular in Tottenham’s midfield before the end of the campaign but it certainly will not be easy, with the likes of Yves Bissouma, Rodrigo Bentancur and Pape Sarr ahead of him in the pecking order.
The former Leeds man may perhaps get his opportunities in the Europa League and will have to grab them with both hands.
Those who have observed Gray’s development closely have been extremely complimentary of the youngster, with Paul Robinson even backing the youngster to be in the England squad sooner rather than later.
The next Zidane? No pressure, Archie Gray
Andy Wright, who was the Spurs man’s former academy coach at Elland Road, has revealed that the midfielder’s talent was evident from a young age.
He told Sky Sports: “I remember games where I came away thinking, ‘God, he reminds me of Zidane’. He would do things that you don’t expect.”
The article also carried quotes from Simon Clifford, whose organisation Clifford’s Futebol de Salao, was the first to implement Brzailian-style, short-sided football training in the UK.
Clifford said: “Archie was there two or three times a week, playing with that small, heavier ball in a very tight gym.
“A lot of the things I see him do, how he is able to evade trouble, I can go back to remember him in the hall. That’s been absolutely invaluable for him.”
Spurs Web Opinion
While Gray’s raw talent has never been in doubt, the jury is still out on how he will adapt to football at the highest level. We have seen many extremely talented youngsters fail to make the grade in the Premier League.
However, the 18-year-old does seem to have the right attitude, which is why Postecoglou will fancy his chances of getting the best out of the teenager.
