97% passes, 100% tackles, 100% duels won: 26yo United star was back to his best vs Southampton yesterday
Manchester United returned to winning ways with a 3-0 Premier League victory over Southampton on Saturday afternoon.
The Red Devils started the game in a slow fashion. The Saints had a brilliant chance to open the scoring from the penalty spot.
Andre Onana made a superb save to deny Cameron Archer and that paved the way for a stellar turnaround before the interval.
Matthijs de Ligt scored his maiden United goal in the 35th minute and few moments later, Marcus Rashford was on the scoresheet.
The second half was routine for the Red Devils with literally no attacking threat from the Saints.
Alejandro Garnacho put the gloss on the performance. He made it 3-0 with seconds left on the clock after a lovely assist from Diogo Dalot.
De Ligt was handed the man of the match after scoring a crucial goal to open the scoring, but Lisandro Martinez was equally impressive.
The Argentine has had a mixed start to the new campaign, but he looked back at his best today.
The 26-year-old completed 97% of his passes while winning 100% of his duels and tackles.
Martinez also made seven recoveries and did not commit a foul before his substitution.
He was replaced by Harry Maguire in the 79th minute after picking up a knock and manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he will be assessed.
The United faithful will be hoping that he can recover in time for next weekend’s league encounter against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.
The club have a Carabao Cup third round tie against Barsnley on Tuesday and Martinez will likely be rested even if he is deemed fit to play.
