The Royals won’t have a losing record this year!
The Royals clinched a non-losing season last night.
“We need to keep winning,” Royals manager Matt Quatraro said. “This is a hotly contested race for the playoffs and we know that every day is important. All we can do today is win one game.
“It doesn’t matter if it’s our 81st or 82nd (victory) whatever it is. We can just keep putting our best foot forward every day.”
Alec Marsh was on his game, writes Anne Rogers.
In order for his curveball to be effective, Marsh has to “rip it in front,” he said, making him get back into his north-south delivery and be in the zone. And the curveball was effective Friday, as was his sweeper. The most significant one came in the fifth inning to strike out Bryan Reynolds with runners on first and third and two outs.
“It’s been my best pitch over the last couple months,” Marsh said. “Being able to throw it down for swing and miss to both righties and lefties. It’s been an equalizer pitch for me, not just relying on the sweeper.”
Adam Frazier reflected on returning to Pittsburgh, where he spent most of his career.
“It feels different, I guess,” Frazier said. “It’s good to be back. A lot of good memories, familiar faces over there and familiarity with the city and everything. It feels a little weird because it’s been so long. But it feels good.”
Michael Massey hit a bird during batting practice.
“I was kind of freaking out,” Massey said. “It came out of nowhere. I didn’t really have a reaction, but I wasn’t happy about it. I hit a line drive and it caught him pretty square. It kind of nosedived and it was kind of crazy. I don’t know how else to describe it.”
Michael Lorenzen will get a rehab start in Omaha.
The Royals want him to get three “ups,” manager Matt Quatraro said — three innings — so he’s built up for next week.
