Woman with special needs allegedly kidnapped during vehicle theft in Topeka, one in custody
TOPEKA (KSNT) - Topeka police say one person is in custody following an alleged theft and kidnapping situation on Thursday.
Rosie Nichols with the City of Topeka said in a press release that officers with the Topeka Police Department were called around 1:15 p.m. on Sept. 12 to a gas station in the 600 block of Southeast Quincy. Police were told a vehicle was stolen, which contained a woman with special needs still inside.
The TPD shared information with other law enforcement agencies regarding the incident. The Kansas Highway Patrol later spotted the vehicle near Lawrence on I-70 and tried to pull it over, but the driver refused. The chase ended near Bonner Springs, after the KHP deployed stop sticks and used a tactical vehicle intervention technique. The individual with special needs was returned to her guardians without incident.
The suspect, a 29-year-old Topeka woman, was arrested and booked into the Shawnee County Department of Corrections on numerous charges. These included:
- Aggravated burglary; Vehicle; to commit felony, theft, DV or sexually motivated crime.
- Kidnapping; In Flight Or The Commission Of Any Crime.
- Theft >$1,500<$25,000 Motor Vehicle.
- Aggravated battery; Recklessly cause great bodily harm/disfigurement.
- Criminal Damage To Property; Misdemeanor.
- Interference with LEO; Conceal/alter/destroy evidence in felony case.
- Theft; shoplifting Unknown Value.
- Theft <$1,500 From Motor Vehicle.
Abigail Christian with the Shawnee County Sheriff's Office said deputies were helping with this incident.
