Night games - travel from Worcester/West (23 replies)
Always driven to home games until now, parking around Bolton Road / Small Heath Bridge area. Never had damage/theft in 35 yrs but feel like I’m on borrowed time and always been relieved to find an intact car on return post game. I know others haven’t been so fortunate and plod don’t really care.
Local road closures ( and the cycle path that’s never seen a bike, just litter), coupled with higher attendances taking limited space even earlier mean I’m looking for easier/safer alternative travel.
However, crap night train service mean a real risk of getting stranded trying to get any further West than Worcester, so been looking at options for Park & Ride which may be helpful to some.
There’s a large secure car park at Longbridge which is an obvious choice 5 mins off M5, with trains every c15 mins into New St, but do another 4 miles into Selly Oak and there’s about 700 free parking spaces there too.
Monday night I’m planning on trialling Selly Oak , getting the 18:32 (£2.25 return with railcard) which will give a nice hour and twenty mins for a leisurely walk up Digbeth and a pre- match pint or two.
That’s a 30 mile each way trip in the car from Malvern (say a tenner in fuel), free, secure parking and £2.25 on the train into/from New St. Should get us home just after 11 if all goes to plan.
Might be of help to some looking for alternative options…
