She shared all the dos and don’ts of making a space appear more elegant and refined.
“We all love to spruce our homes and personalize them to our taste,” she said.
“While furnishing a living room can enhance the space by adding character, over-decorating can sometimes lead to the opposite outcome that we’d hoped for.”
AVOIDING COMMON MISTAKES
Marszal shared the faux pas that can put a damper on your space.
“Over-styling a chair is one common mistake that can impact the entire room’s appearance and can even make it appear cheap and tacky,” she said.
“Adding too many layers onto the chair, using throws and cushions, can make the furniture piece look cluttered and suffocated.
“This can make the chair look tacky, influencing the rest of the living room and resulting in a cheaper-looking space.”
She recommended an alternative approach to decorating to spruce up a room and make it more elegant.
“Instead, follow a less is more approach by limiting the number of decor accessories you use for a minimal aesthetic that allows the chair’s characteristics to shine,” she said.
“When accessorizing the chair with a throw, draping it over the arm of the chair can create an expensive and elegant look without overpowering the piece.
“Adjust the throw accordingly, however, avoid it from touching the floor to ensure a stylish, sophisticated appearance.”
Marszal also pays extra attention to the materials used with furniture.
“Low-quality fabrics can diminish your living room’s luxury appeal, with this applied to the cushions used to accessorize chairs,” she said.
“This can hinder its quality feel, making the chair and the rest of the room appear cheap.
“Scuffed fabrics and flat, worn-out cushions can also create a cheap, washed-out look.
“To prevent this, opt for high-quality fabrics such as velvet or corduroy, and ensure the cushion is nicely plumped for a luxury effect.”
The interior designer added that small styling tweaks and statement pieces can make all the difference.
“Styling a chair correctly can have a significant impact on the living room’s appearance,” she said.
“A statement chair is a great way to enhance the space, introducing style and character into the room.
“By being intentional when accessorizing the chair, you can change the entire feel of the room from cheap to chic.”
