My parents don’t like my gender-neutral baby name – my dad made me cry when he said it’s ‘terrible’ and ‘awful’
A WOMAN has revealed that her parents don’t like the gender-neutral baby name she has chosen for her child.
The pregnant woman shared that she told her dad the name she had chosen, and was stunned when he slammed it as ‘terrible’ and ‘awful’.
Left heartbroken at the situation, the mum-to-be took to social media to share her moniker dilemma with others.
Posting on Reddit, on the BabyBumps thread, the woman titled her post ‘Parents don’t like baby name’.
Posting under the username @gillispieme, the anonymous woman then wrote: “I’m mostly looking for some support and feeling curious to hear from others who may have experienced something similar.
“I’m 27 weeks pregnant and I was having a really lighthearted, sweet conversation on the phone with my dad last night.
“I mentioned that we have a new name we like for the baby and then told him the name.”
The pregnant woman shared: “The name is Bennett – planning to call him Ben (if it turns out to be a boy).”
She then revealed: “He immediately, viscerally reacted negatively saying ‘oh god, that’s awful!’
“And then I replied ‘Dad! We like it..’ and he went on in the similar shocked and upset voice ‘that’s a terrible name, I’m sorry.’
“I immediately burst into tears. He tried to backtrack and apologised, saying it was up to us whatever we chose.
“But it felt like the moment had been ruined.”
The pregnant woman explained that her father’s reaction has left her gutted, as she continued: “I’m not sure if I’m just hormonal, but this interaction left my heart hurting more than I expected.”
She then asked fellow parents: “Have others experienced parents rejecting names? How did you handle it?
“I know at the end of the day it doesn’t matter if we like the name, but OUCH.”

Reddit users were left stunned by the woman’s situation and many took to the comments to share their thoughts.
Whilst many stressed the importance of not telling people their baby names, others were keen to support the woman.
One person said: “Don’t share any more names with anyone. Everyone always has their opinion but they don’t matter.”
Another added: “Don’t share names until the baby is born. That’s what we planned.
“Other people’s opinions don’t matter. What matters is that you like it.”

At 35 weeks pregnant, by far the trickiest part of pregnancy for me in the past few months (minus the insomnia and countless night-time wee breaks!) has been trying to decide on a baby name.
The dilemmas are endless…
My partner and I went for a private scan to find out the gender as early as we could – partly due to the fact we thought it would make baby naming so much easier because we’d only have to come up with a list of names for one gender rather than two.
How wrong we were…
I was absolutely thrilled to be told I was expecting the baby girl I’d already dreamed of, but being one of the last of my friends to fall pregnant, I’ve had countless conversations over the years with excited pals discussing their top baby names…something which I wish I could go back in time and un-hear.
With each friend mentioning at least 10 possible monikers, I can’t help but feel like several are now a no-go even though I know it’s something that none of them would mind in the slightest – it’s a total me problem!
The debate comes up time and time again on social media forums – can you choose the same name that was a ‘potential’ for a friend’s baby?
It’s a very divisive topic and opinions are always mixed…and I don’t want to be THAT person.
While some will argue there’s thousands of other names out there to choose from, others will say you need to choose YOUR favourite…after all, there’s no guarantee that person will even have another baby.
Then there’s also the issue of finding a name you adore…only to research it online and read one negative comment amongst hundreds of positives that you just can’t shake off.
I made that very mistake when I fell in love with a certain name (I won’t reveal it because I don’t want to ruin it for others!) …only to see someone point out that it constantly gets autocorrected on a phone to something rather rude instead. So, back to the drawing board we went..
Just five weeks to go and it looks like our little one is going to be known as ‘baby gal’ for a little while longer!
A third wrote: “Sorry your dad had such a bad reaction! That sucks.”
Whilst someone else commented: I’m sorry that happened. That sounds stressful!”

Meanwhile, another user shared: “It’s normal to want them to like your name. But they’re from a different time and have completely different tastes I’m sure.
“If they make any more negative comments just say, ‘too bad.'”
Not only this, but other Reddit users were quick to praise the woman’s baby name.
One parent beamed: “Scrolled quickly to see the name, that’s my kid’s name. If you want my biased opinion, it’s a great name.”
A second chimed in: “It’s a beautiful name, they’ll learn to love it.”
