Drivers brace for travel chaos as multiple roads to close in major city this weekend for popular race
DRIVERS are bracing for travel chaos – with multiple roads set to close in a major city for a popular race this weekend.
The London Triathlon will bring much of the capital to a standstill both today and tomorrow.
Athletes will start and finish the race at the ExCel Centre in the east London docklands.
But their route carves through central London all the way to the Houses of Parliament in Westminster and back again.
The triathlon includes elite athlete races today and tomorrow, a 100km contest and a series of relay races.
Today, seven thoroughfares in the east London boroughs of Newham and Tower Hamlets will close from noon until 7pm.
All seven roads except the Leamouth Roundabout will also close from 4.30am until 6.30pm tomorrow.
A whopping 17 major roads in Westminster and the City of London will also shut from 4.30am until 2pm tomorrow.
The Sunday triathlon routes goes past London landmarks like St Paul’s Cathedral, Horse Guards Parade and Big Ben.
In a letter to Londoners, the event organisers said: “The London Triathlon is returning in July, but with a few changes!
“The Professional Triathletes Organisation is working with London Marathon Events to deliver the event in the capital.
“The new event name is the London T100 Triathlon – and it’s the fourth leg of the new eight-stop T100 Triathlon World Tour.
“As in previous years, the event will start and finish at ExCel London and will feature a variety of triathlon distances.
“The London T100 will also include some exciting new elements in 2024.
“These include am elite athlete race on both days, a new 100km option and several team relay events.
“This means there will be road closures in your area on Saturday 27 and/or Sunday 28 July.
“We are working closely with councils and Transport for London to ensure disruption is kept to the absolute minimum.
“Thank you in advance for your understanding and we apologise for any inconvenience that the event weekend may cause.
“We hope you can come along to experience what the London T100 has to offer!”
