From ancient rituals to modern balance: The essence of water in Cyprus
As we revel in the full splendour of summer here in Cyprus, swimming in our crystal blue seas and hidden pools becomes an integral part of the seasonal experience. This rejuvenating immersion does more than just provide a break from the routine, it deeply cleanses our spirits and revitalises our souls.
In our modern, fast-paced Western world, we’ve largely lost touch with the ancient traditions that celebrated water’s purifying and renewing powers. Reflecting on these traditions reveals the depth of our current disconnect. Ancient Greeks, for instance, used sea baths as a crucial purification ritual. The Egyptians held water in high esteem for its life-giving and cleansing properties, employing frequent ritual washings during the embalming process to purify and revivify the deceased. Similarly, the Old Testament is replete with references to water for ritual purification, such as the priests in Exodus washing their hands and feet before approaching the altar. Even today, Catholic priests sprinkle holy water as a protective measure against evil.
In contrast, Eastern cultures have preserved their reverence for water, seamlessly integrating it into their health and spiritual practices. Traditional steam rooms, Japanese baths and Korean spas are ubiquitous and serve as communal hubs for health and relaxation. In Korea, ‘jjimjilbang’ are more than just bathhouses; they are vital cultural spaces where people of all ages gather to engage in health and beauty rituals, fostering a sense of community and wellbeing.
In my practice, where I blend the ancient wisdom of Greek traditions with the insights of Eastern philosophy, water’s significance is paramount. Feng Shui, with ‘Shui’ meaning water and ‘Feng’ meaning wind, underscores the importance of water in achieving balance and harmony. Ancient Feng Shui masters meticulously chose locations for their noble patrons, seeking spots with ideal water features. A house nestled at a mountain’s base with streams on either side, leading to a sea or pond, was deemed perfect, embodying the auspicious ‘belly of the dragon.’ Conversely, homes situated over stagnant water were considered ill-fated, as such conditions were believed to bring misfortune.
Today, these principles translate into modern living. While the temporary blessing of clear water is beneficial, prolonged exposure – such as living on a boat full-time – can be detrimental to both physical and mental health. Just as terrestrial creatures thrive by alternating between wet and dry states, so too must we.
In contemporary Feng Shui, understanding water’s nature and effects is crucial. Artificial ponds and man-made water features can enhance our luck and serenity when used appropriately, but nothing compares to the profound benefits of natural water sources. Time spent by the sea or a flowing stream purifies the spirit, clears the mind, and opens up new opportunities.
For those feeling stuck in their careers, adding a water feature in the Career Gua of your home can attract new prospects and growth. Similarly, to invite love, mentorship or wealth, incorporate water elements in the respective Guas of your space. When we are too rigid or lack self-awareness, water in the Self-Knowledge and Cultivation Gua can foster reflection and growth.
However, it’s essential to strike a balance. If you’re feeling indecisive or depressed, it’s wise to limit water elements in your environment. For those in stable relationships, placing water in the love corner can inadvertently invite tensions or even a third party. Thus, water elements, including mirrors which represent water, should be avoided in the bedroom and love corners. Additionally, the health and centre Guas should be kept relatively dry unless advised otherwise by a health professional, such as an acupuncturist, who can assess if your body is too ‘damp.’
