Cosmetic doctor reveals the eye cream ingredients that really work – don’t assume the most expensive product is the best
FROM brightening dark circles to tightening fatigued skin, there are key ingredients to look out for when buying eye creams, says an expert.
He shared his advice for targeting various skin concerns without splurging on pricey products that may not deliver visible results.
Dr. Ross Perry is the Medical Director of Cosmedics Skin Clinics, a UK-based company specializing in cosmetic and medical skin treatments.
Speaking to The U.S. Sun, he shared advice for a flawless face.
EYE OPENER
Dr. Perry said eye creams are usually “thicker” than normal moisturizers and formulated specifically for delicate skin.
With claims that they target lines, wrinkles, dark circles, and puffiness it can be “confusing” to choose the right one when browsing packed shelves.
“In the first instance, I’d opt for choosing something that is fragrance-free and hypoallergenic meaning that It’s relatively unlikely to cause an allergic reaction,” he said.
“Most eye creams will contain similar ingredients to normal moisturizers but with different strengths.”
He shared his opinion on some of the most popular ingredients listed on eye creams.
He said caffeine has an “immediate tightening effect,” but the fresh-faced effect tends to wear off “relatively quickly.”
“Eye cream containing vitamin C is a good choice as it helps protect against free-radical damage,” she said.
“Those containing hyaluronic acid will give the under-eye area a great moisture boost.
“For dark circles opt for an eye cream containing peptides which essentially are moisture-boosting ingredients that work wonders to revitalize skin and improve elasticity.
“While light reflecting mica will help give a more youthful, softer look when applied, due to the way it reflects light away from any visible wrinkles or lines in the skin.
“Again peptides will also help with under-eye puffiness.”
He recommended buying anti-aging eye creams that contain vitamin A with retinol to reduce the appearance of puffiness and fine lines.
However, it isn’t the only ingredient that can be effective for targeting the issue.
“If fine lines and wrinkles are a concern then opt for an eye cream containing hyaluronic acid to help moisturize,” he said.
“Products containing Co-enzyme Q10 will help soothe, soften, and plump around the eye area.”
Dr. Perry suggested asking for a sample from a beauty counter before splurging on an expensive eye cream.
“It may be a case of trying a few before you find one that suits you and your skin tone,” he said.
“It really doesn’t have to be the most expensive one on the market that promises to work miracles, they rarely do and you may find what you’re looking for from L’Oreal, Clarins, or Clinique.”
FACE FIXES
Dr. Perry said it’s natural to get forehead lines with age due to a loss of collagen and elastin in the skin.
However, their appearance can be lessened by embracing healthy lifestyle habits.
“For example, keeping skin hydrated by drinking at least 8 glasses of water, and eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins, such as leafy greens and oily fish,” he said.

“Being aware of environmental factors such as wearing a high SPF year-round, not smoking, and keeping alcohol intake to a minimum.
“Also trying to avoid stress.”
He said hyaluronic acid can “temporarily” plump fine lines and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.
“Retinol can also help and I suggest using this at night as it works to stimulate collagen which in turn helps the skin resist wrinkling,” he said.
“Vitamin C also helps to repair the skin and prevent collagen loss from free radical damage such as sun exposure and pollution.”
He revealed facials and chemical peels that exfoliate the skin and boost moisture can be beneficial for encouraging new cell growth.
“This will help to reduce fine lines and improve the skin’s overall appearance,” he said.
“Ultimately, there’s no magic over-the-counter product or facial that is going to make you line-free, it can only lessen the appearance.
“The alternative is of course Botox injections.”
