I’m a makeup artist – three beauty mistakes are AGEING you, including a concealer trick that adds years to your face
CREATING a flawless makeup look without professional help is not an easy task – especially if we’re trying to cover up blemishes and wrinkles.
While many of us try to give ourselves a more youthful look, the way we do our makeup could actually have the opposite effect and make us look even older.
From bright eyeshadow to the wrong concealer colour, some looks could make our faces look decades years older.
Luckily, one expert has revealed the simple mistakes that instantly age you and how to fix them for a more youthful look.
Makeup artist Wayne Goss explains that there are three specific beauty mistakes that could be piling on the years.
Goss, who runs his own cosmetic site, often shares his tips with his four million YouTube followers.
He says: “Majority of us will be using make-up to help improve how we look, or even help cover up some of the wrinkles we’ve gained over the years.
“However, due to some mistakes, the makeup that we’re wearing could actually be doing the opposite effect, and could potentially be adding not just one or two, but up to ten years to our face.”
Metallic eyeshadow
While this was one of the top trends of the 90s, it shouldn’t be the go-to style anymore, experts say.
Over the years our skin can change, so even though it looked good 20-30 years ago, it’s not the case anymore.
Goss says: “Avoid metallic eyeshadows and instead, opt for a matte. Matte generally works best as it doesn’t draw attention to wrinkled areas or creases.
“Powder is also easier to apply over creams, especially as its easier to blend with a good quality brush.
“Never blend eyeshadow with a finger – good quality brushes are made with the intention to blend well with hooded eyelids and fine lines.”
Concealer colour choice
Goss has revealed a concealer mistake that most people make that is actually adding years to your face.
He stressed that it’s important to get the colour choice right and not go “too light” in specific areas.
He explains: “Generally speaking, people may go too light around the eyes with their concealer which can add years to your face, so it’s really important to get the colour that suits your skin tone.
“Cream concealer is always recommended above liquids, and I’d highly recommend applying some on the inner corner of your eye, as that’s the one part of the eye that doesn’t crease.”
Primers
When we’re young, we don’t really think that staying hydrated will affect our makeup.
But as we get older our skin becomes drier and therefore hydration becomes more important.
While this can mean drinking more water, using specific hydrating ingredients on your skin can also work a treat as it is applied directly onto the skin.
Goss advises: “As we get older, our skin will naturally become drier, which is why hydrating ingredients are so important as you get into your older age.
“Look for make-up with ingredients such as Hyaluronic acid when you’re on your next make-up and skincare shopping haul to ensure that your products are keeping your skin hydrated.
“Before you start applying anything to your face, ensure that you’ve applied a heavy moisturiser to ensure your skin stays hydrated.
“Use a good primer before you start applying your make-up to ensure it’ll act as a barrier between your skin and your make-up to help the make-up stay in the right places all day, rather than just in the fine lines.”
FACE WIPE WARNING
FACE wipes are a cheap and easy way to remove makeup off your skin.
But a skincare expert has warned they could actually be doing some damage to your face.
Nicola Russell, who runs her own clinic Skin Geek in Falkirk, explains that many people use the wipes as a cleanser when they should only really be used for breaking down makeup.
Nicola said: “First of all, they are designed to break down makeup, they aren’t really designed to be cleansing your skin.
“This is where a lot of people get it wrong, they are using the makeup wipes as a replacement to cleansers.
“Wipes tend to have a lot more preservatives than your average cleanser, so that the pack keeps the wipes bacteria free.
“This can irritate a lot of people and disrupt the natural protective barrier we have on our skin.”
Nicola – who counts Gemma Collins, Amy Macdonald and Chloe Sims as clients – reveals the best way to use face wipes is to initially remove makeup and then use a good quality cleanser afterwards as your second cleanse.
If you don’t do a second cleanse then the wipes could cause some premature ageing around the eyes and even some irritation and dryness.
