Top Tory admits Keir Starmer on course for mega landslide – but says supermajority can be STOPPED with just 130k votes
A TOP Tory today conceded Sir Keir Starmer is on course for an historic landslide – but said an “untrammelled” Labour supermajority can be stopped by just 130,000 swing voters.
On the eve of the election, Welfare Secretary Mel Stride admitted the polls are pointing to his close ally Rishi Sunak being turfed out of No10 on Friday.
Various analyses have Sir Keir thundering towards a sweep of more than 400 seats that could even eclipse Tony Blair’s 1997 haul.
Meanwhile the Conservatives – under pressure too from Nigel Farage’s Reform and the Lib Dems – are fighting to avoid a total routing that could see fewer than 100 MPs returned.
The PM is clinging to the hope that dozens of contests are on a knife-edge and Tory victories in these battlegrounds could deny Sir Keir an historic landslide.
Mr Stride said this morning: “I totally accept that where the polls are at the moment means tomorrow is likely to see the largest Labour landslide, the largest majority this country has ever seen.
“What matters now is what kind of opposition do we have, what kind of ability is there to scrutinise government within Parliament.
“I have accepted that where the polls are at the moment, it seems highly unlikely that they are very very wrong.
“We are therefore tomorrow highly likely to be in a situation where we have the largest majority that any party has ever achieved.”
Yet the Cabinet Minister ramped up warnings of Labour wielding an unchecked “supermajority” to change Britain irrevocably.
He pointed to analysis showing just 130,000 voters in marginal seats could deny Sir Keir a majority if they switched back to the Tories rather than voting Reform or Lib Dem.
Mr Stride told LBC: “I’m really worried about an untrammelled Labour Party in power, and that really needs to be checked, and people will regret it if we don’t have that, I think.”
The final 24 hours of campaigning will see Mr Sunak increase warnings over tax and immigration if Labour get in.
Whereas Sir Keir will travel to Scotland where he will urge voters to choose “change” after 14 years of Tory chaos.
Both main party leaders and Mr Farage have today set out their final pitch to Sun readers in today’s paper.
Last night Mr Sunak was given a boost as Boris Johnson finally joined the campaign with a barnstorming speech warning against “Starmageddon”.
He told Tory activists: “I am here for one reason and one reason only – the same reason as you are here – because we love our country, and whatever our differences they are utterly trivial by comparison with the disaster we face if these opinion polls are right – and it is a big if.
“I think the British people will still show more sense on Thursday, still draw back from the brink.”
