AUSTIN (KXAN) — An Austin man died while hiking in the Grand Canyon National Park, the National Park Service said Monday.
According to park officials, a report of an unconscious hiker was received around 7 p.m. Saturday on the River Trail. The hiker became unconscious and bystanders gave him CPR while paramedics responded from Phantom Ranch, but efforts were unsuccessful.
The hiker was identified as 69-year-old Scott Sims from Austin, the park service said.
The park service said Sims was trying to reach Phantom Ranch on the South Kaibab Trail for an overnight stay.
An investigation into Sims' death is ongoing, the park service said.
The National Park Service said it does not recommend hiking the inner canyon between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. because temperatures can reach over 120 degrees Fahrenheit.
